Garlic and onions stay in your blood and help break up fats there. That is why you can sweat the garlic smell.
I think the vampire connection comes from a time when people believed that certain herbs and plants kept away evil beings.
It can't hurt.

Why would you want to keep vampires away? They can give energy as well as take it. You don't have to look at them as all bad.
