Will the fact that I've never even held a gun before be a huge problem?

The marching looks pretty complicated, is it hard to get a hold of?

Are the drill sergeants as big of d*cks as they are made out to be, I don't know if I can take somebody screaming in my face.

Is it true that you can join with a buddy and be guaranteed to serve basic with them?

You have absolutely nothing to worry about at all. I often use the phrase " If I survived the Army anybody can." I was a nerd, uncoordinated, and had never held a weapon in my life. However, my drill taught me a very important lesson that I have carried with me 'til this day: You master the weapon and never let the weapon master you-When in charge, take charge soldier. With that I became a Sharp Shooter with the weapon 36 0ut of 40. (38-40 is Expert) Drill sergeants are mean, but you would rather take orders from them and live than to be faced to take orders from the enemy and die. Drills teach you how to survive. So all the "screaming" is just to prepare you mentally for those who may not be nice to you in an unfortunate situation. I have a secret; It's mind over matter: If you do not "mind" what the drills are saying then it will not "matter". Do not take Drills screaming at you personally. It's there job. The military is the best experience that I have ever had in my life. I served on AD for 4 years and I plan on joing the reserves in the near future. You will absolutely love the military. You learn discipline, get to travel, meet a network of friends who will become like family and gain experiences that will change your life for the better. Go for it ! Hooah! PS. I joined on the buddy system but she ended up getting medically discharged during our basic training together because she started to suffer from hypertension.

1. Yes it will be a huge problem, but part of the job of the Drill Sergeant is to solve that problem. Just remember to squeeze the trigger, you will learn everything else you need to know in Basic.

2. Yes it is, but once again, it is part of the Drill Sergeant's job to teach you.

3. No they aren't, but they will try to convince you that they are. They are training you to handle stress. Just realize that it is part of the training and play the game. Nothing personal.

4. No it isn't guaranteed. But they will try, but some MOS's have what they call One Station Unit Training and if you are not in one of those MOS's and your buddy is, you will go to different Basic training. That said, it is still a good likelihood that if you enlist together, you will go to basic together and if you both choose the same MOS you will probably go to AIT together, just not guaranteed.

As far as shooting goes it is actually a huge plus for you. Most kids who go to basic who have already been firing weapons have sevarl nasty habits that need to be corrected. You by default will not have these.
As far as marching goes it is pretty simple and straight foreward. I mean 7 years old CAP kids can learn how so hard can it be.
YOU Drill Sgt's will be hard but fair. Looking back they will even be some of the best comedians you ever saw.

My platoon DS actually said he liked it better when soldiers haven't ever shot a weapon before. No bad habits to break. I never had either when I went. It was harder for me, but I ended up shooting 28 out of 40- more than you need to qualify.(still pretty bad I know)

You will have D&C starting in reception if they still do it that way. That will teach you how to march, etc..

In the Army the yelling has really been toned down. If I can take so can you. ;)

The fact that you have never held a weapon before is not an issue. You will learn.
Marching is not a hard thing to learn, if you can dance, or have any coordination at all, if you can keep beat to songs, you can march.
The instructors are not all that bad, it can even be comical at times.
Yes, you can go through initial training with a buddy.

Go for it. Not as bad as it look's in the movies.
The Drill Sgt. is not a D**k he's your teacher.they only yell at you to make you do the right thing and get your attention.and other reasons that become clear to after it's all over.
Having no experiance with guns can be a good thing.Meaning you wouldn't have bad habits. They'll teach you ther way and it work's..

They still have the buddy program. As far as joining the reserves might as well go for active duty as many of the reserve units that have been called up and are now serving.

Not a problem...

You'd be surprised how fast you pick it up...

Everybody gets to know the DIs up close and personal. It's not aimed at you personally... unless you mess up a lot. It's designed to stress you so you'll get used to stress. Your training is designed to get you ready to tolerate combat and to come back alive. The drill instructors don't want you to get killed in the first few minutes of combat. So they push you. Everybody gets their share.

There are no guarantees.

"Considering joining..." If you're going to wimp out, now's the time. Don't wait until your day of departure to boot camp draws near.

Its consistently nicely worth pondering. ANY defense force provider is extremely nicely-known, respected, and could consistently look sturdy on a resume. i'm prepared on the army, because of the fact i'm military. notwithstanding choosing a branch relies upon a great deal on what you desire out of your provider. in case you desire to paintings w/ technologies, easily the army or Air tension is probable the astounding for you. in case you desire the delight and status that includes being in boots and being there, on the floor interior the airborne dirt and dust. pass military. so some distance as Marines pass.......umm.....yeah, I recognize Marines, no longer prepared on them, yet yeah, they are ok.
