Second Soprano means you sing the soprano part,
Alto has 1st & 2nd Alto also 1st Alto being the higher part, if you were classified as 1st Alto then you would take the Alto.

Second soprano is still a soprano, not an alto. Although sometimes, if the alto part doesn't go down too low, you might be able to sing it, if the choral group you're in has enough sopranos and not enough altos and needs to switch you to the alto part to help balance out the group sound.
But most of the time you would be singing the soprano part.

It really depends on the director of your choir, and what he or she feels is needed to create a proper balance among parts. However, typically, if you are classified as a second soprano, it means you are a soprano, just in a piece that has two soprano parts you will sing the second soprano part instead of the first. The second soprano part is generally lower, but not always. There are a lot of pieces of music where the first and second soprano parts crossover one another.

When I was in Chorale for years we had Soprano, Second Soprano and Alto. I was a Second Soprano, but I occasionally drifted to Alto if they were struggling.
DH wonders why I always sing off key. We "middles" very, very rarely sing the melody! I can't even hear it any more.

I'm a second soprano as well. I find that it usually depends on the song, but I typically lean toward alto if I must choose between these two.
Often you'll also be given the option of 1st Alto, which is basically interchangeable with second soprano.

It depends on how your choir is divided if yours like mine then a second soprano section that has been divided into high altos and low sopranos. If you were not assigned or you forgot just simply ask the director should be glad to tell you!!

in my chorus class last year i was a second soprano too. usually what my teacher did was, depending on what was needed for the song, split the second sopranos in half. and half would sing soprano (the ones that felt comfortable with it) and the others that felt better with alto would sing alto. so it all depends on which you feel more comfortable singing!

Well it can vary form piece to piece but you will normally sing soprano. It is just when the soprano part splits into two notes that this is really even relevant. When this occurs you just take the lower part.

nicely, in my view the "fach" does not lots rely on the style however the vocal colour interior the style. I even have an incredibly comparable selection, going from D-to-D without warming up, and including a 0.33 on real (Queen of the nighttime's F) with warming up. I sing soprano, simply by fact that's the style the place my voice sounds superb, especially for what I sing (in particular Baroque). I now and returned sing alto in choirs, yet i can not do it for long - I by no ability could have theory, simply by fact i'm extremely gentle making a song tenor or alto for the duration of classes with associates, for myself and all that ... yet I had to confess that ninety minutes of alto isn't proper for my voice. i'm many times hoarse afterwards, that are simply by fact i do no longer practice my decrease selection (no concentration on breath administration, larynx or that) and it does not "shine" as truthfully - I in basic terms don't recognize what to do. Or it may desire to be that i relatively in basic terms am a soprano. i think of that's a hazard to be an incredibly stable alto and a soprano on an identical time, yet given what you informed us it variety of feels that for opera you're greater a soprano and probably an alto for soul? anyplace your voice sounds superb is what makes your "fach", and if for opera it sounds superb interior the better sign up then i could think of you're a soprano. And if it sounds superb interior the decrease aspects once you sing soul song, then you definitely're possibly an alto whilst making a song soul. by ability of ways, on a "undesirable soprano" day I now and returned sing first bass interior the choir, with my lowest be conscious being around Bb under C under center C. yet I nonetheless think of that, "deep down", i'm a soprano whilst it concerns - and that i will use my massive selection for moments whilst i do no longer surely must be the wonderful.
