You may be grinding your teeth together in your sleep. This puts pressure from the lower jaw to the upper jaw and can cause severe pain not only in the jaw but can cause headaches. You may need a device from the dentist that prevents the teeth grinding action.

I know a tension headache is usually first noticed after sleeping cuz you relax when you sleep and then when you wake up you feel the sore muscles. Also if it is based by the back of your neck, at the base of your skull, it might be a tension headache. If you are not drinking alcohol before sleeping, I don't know what else it could be. If the headache wakes you up, it might be serious and you should see the doc. Migraines, which I had for years, usually come on as you are up and around.. Did you get a new pillow? Then there is the sinus headache...if you take a sudafed and the headache is gone in about twenty minutes, it is probably your sinuses. But if you take a sudafed, you probably won't be able to go back to sleep. Also check for carbon monoxide.

Headache is among the most common medical complaints. Some of the reasons which cause headache are hypertension, over work, mental stress, indigestion, sleeplessness, fever, anemia, deficiency of oxygen in the blood, etc. Whenever a headache strikes drink lots of water .Lack of oxygen may have lead to your headache. Place a few ice-cubes in a polythene bag, and apply this on the forehead and temples. Check out http://useinfo-headache.blogspot.com/ for more info

if this is a common occurrence I would suggest you see a Doctor immediately. Headaches occur but not regularly.
If this is a once in a while thing then try drinking more water. Most headaches occur because of dehydration.
When I say drink water I mean water. Our cells need water not coffee or tea or pop or juice or whatever. They need just plain water

next time try two glasses of gatorade. One right after the other. If you are dehydrated it will alleviate your headache within 10 minutes of the last drop. If it doesn;t help, you might be stressed, or it could be an allergy to something in your bedding or your pillow.

The liver energy is highest at 01.00. If your liver is already hyperactive it adds and causes H/A.
Pain killers don't treat the pain but we loose the sense of pain for some time; in that duration our body itself treats sometime and credit goes to meds.
There is no medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.
Acidity, WORRY, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation; drugs,
Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy are their causes. None of them can be treated with medicine. Our 100% success in treating migraine &H/A confirms it.
Acupuncture is the best treatment. I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see.
Avoid late sleeping if possible; worry, spicy foods, sour fruits, stale bakery foods and alcohole.
Sweet foods, COCOANUT WATER,sweet fruits, milk, rice, SPROUTS, SALADS and good sleep will help you.
But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves' juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it isvery strong.
If it is acute pl search a painful point 3-6 mm behind your thumb nail and press it, H/A will disappear within 30 seconds.

If they are on one side only, they're migraines. If they're across your forehead, they're tension headaches. It could be anxiety or stress. Or it could be something more of a warning. No matter what, please see your doctor ASAP. That will make you feel better physically AND mentally. Please make that appt. on Monday. Good luck, my dear. :)
