My wife and I know a girl that is 5 months pregnant and suffering seizures. She is taking the word of her OBGYN that it is merely diabetic seizures and that there is no harm. He doesn't have her tested and she takes his word for it. We are telling her that she needs to see a real neurologist (I have seizures) and not someone who has no experience in this field.
She's trying to tell us that her having seizures will not hurt that baby in the slightest. Somebody out there tell us every hazard possible that this baby will and can suffer as a direct result of her neglecting to see a neurologist.

We don't force it on her but do warn her of the seriousness of risk to the baby and she seems to think that we are just talking air. She takes no one seriously but her doctor.

Seizures during pregnancy...Sounds like classic Eclampsia. Eclampsia is seizures during pregnancy caused by elevated blood pressure. Other symptoms would be extremely swollen ankles and feet, visual disturbances (seeing spots, and floaters), and Headaches. The risk to the baby from it's mother having a seizure is manly from hypoxia. When a person has a seizure they do not breath normally, sometimes not at all! Well at least with generalized Grand Mal seizures. (what I would call floppy fish seizures :-) ) Also due to the high pressure, ecclampsia can cause the babies placenta to become very fragile, making much more likely to separate from the uterine wall causing a condition called "Abruptio placenta. If this happens then the baby would die with in a matter of minutes. Combine the fragilness of the placenta with the force of falling to the ground and convulsing and you make it even more likely that an Abruptio will occur. This is a REALLY big deal!! You REALLY need to tell her this!!

Also if it is diabetic seizures then why the hell does the doctor not treat her underlying problem of gestational diabetes??? Basically you need to tell this friend to get a new doctor, or at least convense her to get a second opinon.. wow this doc sounds like a real quack! Good Luck!

I honestly don't think the seizures will hurt the baby, a fall from a seizure could. Has she had her blood pressure checked regularly? It seems to me that her seizures could be a direct result of high blood pressure. Is she taking her vitamins daily? Sometimes not having enough potassium in the body will cause seizures. If she isn't taking care of her diabetes, she needs to see a diabetes specialist as well. This could cause some serious problems for her...she needs to find out the underlying problem and FAST! The OBGYN sounds like a total quack!

The actual seizures may not harm the baby, but whatever is CAUSING the seizures may harm the baby. It is definitely time for a second, third and even more opinions (if necessary to find and fix the cause).

She's probably pretty scared. Ask her to go to a neurologist just once to play it safe and confirm that her OBGYN is correct. Am wondering if telling her all the horrible possibilities and getting her to doubt her doctor will get her to do what she needs to do. ( She WANTS to believe him)Sometimes we can get so scared, we can't move. Offer to take her.

She should go see her local GP, in some cases the meds she is taking may affect the unborn child and may need a different med during the pregnacy...... some medications are not good for the embryo...... Go to the local chemist & get a data fact sheet from them, that will tell you everything you need to know about that medication

she needs to see another doctor. but you can't push it on her. tell her that if she is driving or walking, and has a seizure, she can injure or kill herself and the baby. her doctor's an idiot. she needs to be tested.
