I swear, If I was told that the ocean was rising and that part of my country was going to be consumed by the ocean, I would consider trying to build some sort of barrier to keep the ocean from consuming land. wouldnt building some sort of barrier to keep the ocean at bay be a wise choice? it may cost a lot but wouldnt it be worth it.

Hey there,

Interesting thought, and something that many other countries have already considered, the Netherlands for example spent 30 years creating a program which they call "North Sea Protection Works" which is to serve as both a barrier for storm surges but should also serve to protect much of the country should there be a rise in sea level... Which there will be sooner than later.

Speaking of the Netherlands and their foresight for flooding in general, did you know that there are now entire neighborhoods with "amphibious homes"? They are houses which when introduced to high tides or floods simply float. These are not concepts they are the real deal. See my links below for more information.

Why doesn't the rest of the world build walls and take other precautions? Well, the answer is quite simple: Many people refuse to believe that we are adversely affecting our climate, as a result, in their minds there will be no flooding so there is no reason to take such expensive measures.

Put simply the populous has no concern for global climate change, not yet at least.

Earth is covered by 71% water and 29% continents. And as time goes by... The water will continue to increase due to Global Warming. We can't build a dam or barrier to keep the water from occupying the land since most of the earth is covered by water.. it will be impossible especially if all the ice from the North poles and South poles already melts! The only thing we could do is to lessen the effects of Global Warming... No walls, dam or any kinds of barriers can protect all the mankind if the earth is already ruined. As the saying goes.. "an ounce of prevention is better than a pounds of cure". Let's start it on ourself...

What we really need to do is to build a wall between the USA and Mexico to keep the Mexicans from consuming all of our social resourses.
You can't build a wall around an entire coastline! What about the rivers that flow into the oceans. What do you plan do do? block them up/

It would be too expensive (I know that like three guys up there said the same) but you also have to consider other global warming consequences such as the lack of drinkable water or the extreme cold and hot weather. So it's not about having a solution for the problem (which is good if you know you can't avoid the problem) but trying to not have the problem at all with preventive action.

Worked for The Netherlands. Actually, we will not need to dike the entire coast line, only the low areas. Still, it would be a huge project, and I'm not sure who would be able to manage it, certainly not the government (they can't even bury the highways in a singel city without massive cost overruns, schedule delays and fatally shody work).

You mean like Holland has done? Holland already has lots of people living on land below sea level. I am sure sea walls all around the world will be improved and expanded for the next 100 years, but. I wonder if that will be enough.

It'd be cheaper not to have the sea level go up and even if we can't stop it rising moving is probably going to be a bargain compared with a levee.

Besides, there are two types of levees, those that have broken and those that will break.

rising water isnt the only issue...the changing temperature is making storms more powerful - so there would be even more Katrina incidents going on

besides...a simple wall cannot keep out an entire ocean...our only option is to move to higher ground

The cost would be enormous. What would you do about getting ships in and out, giant locks?

It's cheaper to reduce global warming and limit sea level rise.

The oceans aren't rising. Currently they are 30cm under levels recorded in the 1840's.
