What will happen when I get to the training sight and they see that I need a root canal? I've been avoiding it because of the pain. The cavity is wide, because I can see it in the mirror, though it doesn't really bother me a whole lot. Does the army cover dental care?

The military does cover dental care.

My understanding is that root canals are painful. That is not exactly what you want while you are in training! Anyone else in this situation should take care of it before you leave.

While the army will cover it, understand that it may delay your training. You may (or may not) become a medical hold-over where you are when you have it. You may find yourself on a profile. It could even cause you to get recycled if there are complications .

Well, you might be in a bit of a bind. Any Endodontic treatment has to be completed before you are considered physically qualified, under the dental standards, for enlistment. Endodontics involves root canal surgery.
The Army might not cover the dental care in your case because it was a disqualifying condition which existed prior to your entry into the service.

they DO cover all dental for you... I just had a root canal and a tooth extraction last week... It didn't hurt one bit... I've had 2 root canals now... the first time it hurt but this time no pain... just don't stress out, you'll be fine...

They will take you to dental and fix it while you are in basic, or at least thats what the Marines did for my husband. I would assume that much is the same. And yes the army covers dental.
