I have been told that I have a large adenoma in the liver. Could this be the cause of two large rectal bleeds? Colonoscopies (2) both normal? Very tired all the time everything an effort. Can it be cured? Is it dangerous? ultrasound and CT scans show a mass which is suspected to be an adenoma now awaiting MRI but not really sure why? No-one is explaining anything and a lot of misdiagnosis so far. Am I able to ask to be transferred to another doctor in another hospital? Do not feel I am being taken too seriously no-one seems to feel that an explanation is called for! Consultant never reads my notes before I go in to see him and often is looking at tests conducted months ago. I would like to see someone else am I able to do this or am I stuck with this very rude man who has so little regard for his patients? I have no idea what is really going on and no-one will answer my questions. I am not a fool and I am very aware that something very wrong is going on not sure how wrong?

Hepatic adenoma is a benign liver tumor. There is no connection between the adenoma and rectal bleeding. There is a small risk that the tumor may become cancerous. The major risk is that liver adenomas can bleed, especially large ones. For this reason it is sometimes recommended that they be surgically removed (depending on size and location), or embolized.

(Embolization involves catheterization and local injection of material to block the artery supplying blood to the tumor. This will reduce the size of the tumor, and significantly reduce the likelihood of bleeding. It is less invasive than surgery, but may not be appropriate for all tumors.)

MRI is better than CT or ultrasound at distinguishing adenomas from other types of liver tumors. The test was undoubtedly ordered so that the doctors are more certain of the diagnosis.

Adenoma of liver occurs rarely, more among women of child bearing age specially if they had used contraceptive pills for long. Diagnosed and treated surgically it is harmless.
Hepatoma on the other hand is cancerous. This can cause GI bleeding etc. Alpha feto proten is a tumor marker for Hepatoma and its presence clinches the diagnosis of Hepatoma. It is not present in Adenoma of liver.

Adenoma is a benign tumor. Get a medical dictionary and bone up on your terms. Don't worry on your own, they'll tell you when to worry. Ninety percent of all medical tests are caused by a fear of malpractice lawsuits. It's not a good idea to worry, it stresses you out.

Death is the worst thing that could happen and it happens to everyone. Fortunately, that's not likely to happen to you. Take a deep breath and live a little. Do a little dance...
