Is the picture noticeably better than a standard DVD player on a HD(1080p) TV?

There is no such thing as that. There are a few upscaling DVD players but they will only go 1080i not progressive. the picture quality is NOT as good as a hi-def DVD player at a true 1080p resolution. the dvd upconverter is talking the resolution of about 300 to 480 lines of resolution and converting it to 1080 lines of resolution (not pixels) since it doesn't know what info is in these new lines of resolution it essentially is just "filling in the blanks". Standard DVDs dont have that much resolution information on them. this is why an upconverter is not replacing blueray or hddvd. I have an upconverting DVD player on a projector and another on a TV that can both do 1080i. isn't as good as 1080p but very close and a whole lot cheaper. If you got the money. go big. Hope I helped. Good luck.

while it is possible to have a good upscaling dvd player, it will never be the same or even close, it is like saying that an orchestra without the wind section is still the same as a fuyll orchestra--that means that the horn section has to fill in, and , well, a trumpet just isn't the same as a flute

upscaling dvd players have a possibility to look good but it is only a processors guess at what might have been there that you end up seeing, if it thinks that, on a white screen, one of the missing pixels is grey or black, that is what your tv displays, so you end up with the wrong picture(this would never happen, it is just a very extreme example)

you can't add details that aren't there without getting some of them wrong

The post above me is totally wrong. Here is the best standard DVD player that upconverts to 1080P. It is highly regarded by audio/video enthusiasts but it is virtually unknown to the general public. It's pic quality is very close to the upconverting process of HD or Blu Ray players.
