I do not recommend that you put your social security number on a job application form anywhere. The company does not need it unless you are hired, and you have no control over who has access to the applications.

Online applications are generally secure, however I suggest that you get the company's mailing address from the website, and send a nice qualify paper resume instead - so few people bother to do that, so it makes an application stand out.

I would think it depends on the type of job you are looking for. If you are looking for restaurant work or retail, you would be better off going to the actual store to apply. The way my companies on-line application is handled is too slow. When I need someone, I can't wait up to two months for online applications to come to me!

Warning! Do not put your social security number on a job application unless you are hired! You do not know what they do with social security numbers.

It depends on the employer, usually if they don't call you within 2 weeks of submitting the app. they arn't interested. You have to go through an interview process first, most places don't just hire you right away. The best think to do is call the place you apllied at about a week after you applied to follow up.
