I am 16 and an atheist. All of my neighbors are active Christians and my mom told me not to tell them about it. As if its a dirty secret!! I don't think that them being Christian is a reason to think differently about them! So why should they care what I believe? Its like being Atheist means you've committed murder or something... Does anyone else agree with me??

I grew up as an athiest and alot of my christian friends know that,
Most are cool about it but some always try and "Save me with the power of christ"

But yes alot of people treat me like i killed a bunch of little kids and fed them to the homeless.

Also its best not to tell them, otherwise you will have about 400 christians trying to convert you

Oh and NEVER EVER prove there is no god to them. they hate that :)

What's bad about being an atheist? Dying and going to hell is pretty bad. No, you are not a worse person than anyone else, but trust me on this. You don't want to be an atheist all of your life.

I think that you should tell all of your Christian friends that you don't believe. That way they will know that you need to be saved, and maybe one of them will have enough guts to tell you about Jesus.

I think that maybe your mother is looking at Christianity only as a statics symbol. If that is the case, she doesn't really understand either. There is much more at stake here than a dirty little secret.

The reason for Christians caring what you believe, is because they love you, and they do not want you to die and find yourself one day in Hell; because you refused to believe in the One and only true and living God, Jehovah. You most certainly will not be able to hide your beliefs from God, for He knows the very intents of your heart; every thought that goes through your mind. Being an atheist is much worse than being a murderer or anything else. For at least when you kill a person, or you commit any sin of any kind for that matter, you still know that there is a God that will forgive you if you ask Him to do so. I am by no means telling anyone to commit any sin of any kind, just because they know that there is a God who will forgive them. But if you do not even believe in God to start with, how can you ever ask Him to forgive you for your sins that you have committed.

If my child claimed to be an athiest, I would want every neighbor, every friend, and family member that claimed to be a Christian to know it so that they would pray for my child. I would take it very serious...a life and death situation, because that's what it is, spiritually. You say you are an athiest which means you don't believe that there is a God, Right? Just think about this... IF there is no God, (the way that you believe) then we as Christians have nothing to worry about either way because if we die where going to end up in Heaven and if there were no God We'd end just like you when we die ,Right? So, we have nothing to lose. BUT on the other hand, What if we're right?? WHAT IF THERE IS A GOD??? Where does that leave you?(You stand to lose your soul in Hell, a place NOT created for you, but for Satan and his angels) A place so terrible that those who are in it plead for some means of warning others not to come there.(luke 16:22-31) So what's so bad about being an athiest? You're being deceived by Satan, someone who hates you so much and hates God so much and wants nothing more than to see you destroyed in Hell because you are God's creation. He knows how much God loves you and he knows how much it will hurt God to spend eternity without you. You may ask," if God loves me that much, then why would He send me to Hell?" Because he gives you a choice, the same choice that he gave Satan, to love Him or not to love Him. He won't MAKE you, it's your choice, HEAVEN or HELL.

Having a working relationship with Jesus gives your life structure, meaning, hope and access to the Creator of all things. I don't know the reason your mom does not want you to tell your neighbors you are atheist but as a parent in a slip-shod world I would be very concerned about your belief. Being young and naturally adventurous can lead to some very hurtful situations without structure in your life.

It doesn't matter what your beliefs are. They are different then the community around you.

Any time a member of the community is "different" a instinctual pack mentality usually prevails.

You could be Hindu in a Mu slum community, the results will be the same.

The group moves to exclude the "different" member. They no longer offer them protection and resources, and may even attack them.

Sounds extreme, right?
It doesn't have to be to make life for your Mom unbearable.
She owns her house, doesn't she?

When they find out that YOU don't share their beliefs, it will not matter what your mother believes- she will be the one punished when you leave home and begin your life.

Anything from calling the police on a noise disturbance, to letting their dog relieve it's self on her lawn- they might not treat her the same. This is what she wants to avoid.

It's not right, but it's human nature.

If you love your mother, do ask she asks.

Know you do it for the love of your mother- not out of fear of them.

I am not atheist, but I am not a Christian either, and I know exactly what you are talking about. I agree that you mother is just trying to avoid confrontation with the neighbors, which is good. However, if that ever comes to the light, don't deny it. I don't shout to everyone I meet "I am spiritist!!" , but if anyone asks me, I tell the truth. Sometimes I meet Christians and they tell me something about their faith, I can nod, or just smile, but as long as they don't ask my opinion, I don't tell them. I am not hiding what I believe, I just don't want to confront, especially because I don't want to convert anyone to my religion either.

Peace!

There is nothing bad about being an atheist, the sad part is when you die you will go to hell. This happens because you have rejected God's gift, His Son. You see even though you do not believe it God sent His Son to die in our place to pay the price for our sins. It is our sins that keep us from going to heaven. God is holy and cannot tolerate sin in His presence. It is the blood of Christ that will wash away our sins if we put our belief and trust in Him. So it sounds like you cannot accept this fact so choose to be an atheist. It is your choice but the consequences are extremely high if you are wrong which I believe you are. Before you rule out Christ could I suggest you take a look at the book of John in the New Testament then make your decision. Eternity is forever, I encourage you to give God a chance, He loves you to the point He gave His Son that you might have eternal life. Cheers!

First off if you are atheist, then, don't hide it. You are who you are. Maybe your mom knows how they will respond to you, and she doesn't want you to deal with some of the peoples responses. Not all of us Christians are anal about others beliefs. But, if you decide to share your belief, please be ready for a debate. I don't say this as a threat, I say that to try and get you prepared. I am not going to through Bible verses at you because you have already heard about salvation, so just be yourself, and live your life. I do pray though that one day you will receive the gift of salvation.

since you say your friends are Christian, I'll give you the Christian perspective. If you have friends of other beliefs, I can summarize their views as well.

The Christian view is that there is a God (a theist view, you hold to an atheist view). this God is infinite, eternal, and unchangeable in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth. God commands you to honor, respect, worship, obey him. you choose not to so you should be prepared for any righteous judgement and punishment due you. Offending such a God is worse than committing murder.

Now if you tell your Christian friends that you are an atheist, they will be concerned about your eternal destiny and want you to become a Christian.

Now as an atheist, engaging in any sort of religious conversations is rather pointless, except perhaps for reasons of curiousity or entertainment. In other words, it doesn't make any sense for an atheist to try to convince others to be atheists, because from that view it really doesn't matter.

Now it's not uncommon for someone to point out to an atheist that some particular aspect of their life is not logically consistent with their stated beliefs. but from an atheistic perspective, it doesn't matter so there's no need to try to defend it.
