Xanax is a benzodiazepine. It's very effective for controlling anxiety immediately. The body does become dependent on the medication, which makes discontinuation a little tricky, but she shouldn't worry about that now. Successful treatment of the anxiety is what matters most at this moment.

Paxil is an antidepressant known for its sedating side effects, and those effects make it a common choice for anxiety. Antidepressants are an ideal treatment because they have a consistent effect all day, whereas Xanax is strong but has a short duration, so the effect comes in "bursts". Still, there's no reason why both can't be used.

Physical dependence develops for both medications, although the majority of discontinuations are not unpleasant when tapered as directed. In the meantime, just make sure she knows that it's important not to suddenly stop taking either one if she's been taking it for a while.

I am single mum. I have been suffering for panic attacks for some 15 years now, though it was not until recently I understood what they were. They were progressively getting stronger and more frequent, stopping me from some days even leaving my house. I read this book and it all made perfect sense.

I am not saying I was not terrified of putting theory to action, I was more scared of that than the next attack! But I decided to view it as a game, one I had control of and could therefore not lose!

I am on Paxil now for many years and my depression is well controlled. I also have had counseling to change my ways of thinking.

Paxil has made me feel like my normal self. Depression is like being deep in a well. A well filled with jello. Gray jello made with lead.
