I would say with great patience. A crab mentality is often just trying to rile other people. By remaining calm, and responding with answers that allow them their opinions while giving your stance, you can find your own place with "a crab."
If you want to stay on friendly terms. just make sure to listen and comment appropriately, ask pertinent questions, not irritations interrogations.
If they are crabby and you don't want to deal with it, stand up for yourself! Your opinions, thoughts, and actions are all valid. don't be intimidated.
