I dealt with the pain (excrutiating, to say the least), because my family doc waited until 4:45 on Friday afternoon to call me back and say they couldn't call in a prescription for the numbing eye drops I requested, because an eye injury was not something to treat over the phone. Anyway, the pain is pretty much gone now, but I'd rather not go to a doc if I don't have to. I know eyesight is not something to mess with, but if it feels much better, is it safe to assume there's no real damage done?

Corneal abrasions will heal in 24 to 36 hours. You can't use numbing eye drops with an abrasion because they impair healing. Had you seen an eye doctor they would have put a bandage contact lens on the eye to deal with the pain and provided antibiotic drops. If the pain is gone and vision is good, you likely don't need to see a doctor.

There is a risk of recurrent erosion with this type of injury. If the eye starts to hurt again, see an eye doc ASAP, you will need special instruction in avoiding future erosions.

staining cornea with fluoroscein dye will show the extent of scratch (abrassion) .A small paper strip is moistened and touched to your cornea which stains the defect produced by the trauma. This is called staining the cornea. was this done when you visited the doctor? The ideal treatment for such trauma is eye patching for 12 or 24 hours, the scratched corneal epithelium heals on its own. Systane is a good lubricating eye drop but you need to make sure the scratch is healed completely by staining method. you will be fine don't worry. Just visit once. take care

You should see a doctor. Just because the pain has stopped does not mean there is no real damage or potential for damage. There might still be debris or tissue resting on the cornea that can cause further scratching.

I would call an ophthalmologist or an optometrist and have someone look you over really good to make sure it has healed right. If it is not you do need attention, and if you need something and do not address it, you can have many problems later. I would rather be safe than sorry.

You should see an eye doctor asap.. yes, it could cause serious damage.. why wait? At the eye doctor they can check how deep the scratch is and tell you if there are any problems etc..

The best thing to do until friday is to just put eye drops in it until you can be seen. Sometimes just the eye drops themselves can help.

Your information says you are a nursing student, ems dispatcher, and fire fighter. With all of this experience please don't say that you have not seen what can happen when people put off medical care when they need it. Yes, get to a doctor right away and let him decide if you need further treatment.

I probably would, especially if you are experiencing some vision loss.
