we took her to the vet several times because she had this increasingly darker discharge from both of her eyes, and she was finally diagnosed as having blocked tear ducts.

What upset me was that the vet said that they could stick a sort of "pipe cleaner" down her ducts to clear them, but they prefered not to do it because "they would just get blocked again". So, my poor kitty has to live with brown matter oozing from her eyes, constantly having to be wiped away by my dad and I.

Has anybody else encountered this problem, and what did you do about it?

Putting a warm, damp cloth over the eyes may provide some relief, if you can get your cat to sit long enough!

The warm water promotes flow, and helps clean the discharge already present.

Yes, I have. Brew some tea with a teabag. Squeeze out the liquid and let cool to luke warm. aply this on the eye. Keep it over the eye for 2-3 minutes. Repeat this 3-4 times daily.

They can flush the tear ducts out by sticking a dull needle into them and flushing with saline. You kitty will be asleep and it wont be painful. I would only do this if nothing else works, but you know those eye boogers are no fun to have all the time.

This, if not already, can become a very painful ear infection and could harm her hearing, besides the constant pain. You need to find another vet. One that cares.
