I have a nice leather couch which somehow recieved a 2" gash in the seating area. I'm not worried from a cosmetically view, but I don't want the gash to get bigger. What's the best way to repair thisw thing?

Tears in leather can be difficult to repair and it is not something I would suggest you undertake yourself especially with that size of tear and in theseat cushion.
Qualified leather technicians are trained how to repair such damage but would need to see the damage before assessing its feasibility.

The whole panel can be replaced and matched to the rest of the sofa. This is something we do all the time for insurance companies as the leather grain pattern has to be matched and the panel recoloured to the rest of the suite. The only problem would be is if it were a Bicast leather as this is difficult/impossibe to replace.

The leather magic kit suggested will not fix a tear but only surface damage.

If the tear is on a seat cushion that can be removed, take the cover off, turn it wrong side out and glue a piece of scrap of leather to the back side of the tear - rough sides together. Make sure the scrap is at least 2 inches bigger than the tear all the way around. Use a fabric glue (something like Tacky Glue) so that it will have some give when it dries. Be sure that the edges of the tear meet well. If the tear is not on a loose cushion, you really need to have it professionally repaired.

You may not like the answer, but, that is how it's done. If you don't have a removable cushion, you should check this site:

You may want to invest in a leather repair kit such as the one here:

I'm not sure there's any other way to fix it without reupholstering.
Good luck!
