Think better! Think optimistically! If you think positively of the things you do -and this is a fact - it will have a positive effect on yourself. By training to think positively, you will slowly change...and stop getting depressed! But seriously, what is the cause of your depression anyway? Is it school? Grades? Socializing? Grades, plan time to study. Socialize, talk more and make friends and overcome your shyness.

There are a lot of other ways to combat depression besides just meds, though don't sell them short, they do have a time and a place. Make sure you get enough sunlite, especially now that the days are getting shorter, get some physical activity, it releases endorphins and this lifts your mood, and try not to eat a diet mostly of carbohydrates which can raise and quickly lower your blood sugar, which can make you feel crappy and irritable. I know it is hard to get up and go outside when you just want to lay in bed, but if you can motivate yourself somehow it does help. Also try to get into a regular routine... get up and get showered and dressed everyday, take care of yourself etc. If you don't want to talk with your mother about it because she has depression, talk with someone you do trust, I could give you a list of suggestions, but it is very personal and the list is different for everyone. I personally talk to my dog, until I hit a certain point and then I talk with church leader I once had, not about religion or anything, but just touching base, making a connection with another human being. Connections are very important. Have you ever tried to express your feelings creatively? Writing, music, art, etc. It also would not hurt to confide in your doctor, this does not mean you have to take meds, as patients have a bill of rights, and one of them is informed consent, meaning as long as you have been given the information and can demonstrate the ability to understand it a patient can not be forced to take any treatment that they do not want to, unless their life is in jeopardy, in which case a court order can often be obtained by the healthcare provider, with supporting documentation of other doctors attesting to your inability to make a competent decision. It is not just your word against your doctors. With family history of depression, your mother, you have a greater risk of being pre-disposed to depression also, though this is definately not always the case. Good Luck, and find someone you can talk to and do things with that make you feel better. If you need help finding someone call NAMI or a crisis hotline, they can often put you in touch with someone.

You don't have just a little depression. You are severely depressed and you need to visit a psychiatrist today. If you're having thoughts of suicide, you need to call 911.
I know you don't want to take meds, but they really are the fastest way to feel better.
Exercise can temporarily relieve depressed feelings, if you exercise until you're hot & sweaty and trigger the endorphines in your body--pain killer/happy hormones.
Meditation--just thinking one or two words quietly with your eyes closed, or just counting your breaths can bring calm and focus to the situation.
Prayer--for some people prayer allows them to escape responsibility for troubles and pain and lay them on someone else's shoulders.
You need to see a psychiatrist. As soon as possible. I cannot stress this enough. NOW! Before you do irreparable damage to yourself.
A resource: NAMI National Alliance for Mental Illness www.nami.org. All the info/links you need to know everything there is to know about depression, plus caring people who can find doctors and support in your area.
Please, please see a doctor soon or go to the hospital or call 911 or call the fire station. All of these people will treat you seriously and compassionately and will get you help.

When you start to feel that way try to think of things that might be causing you to feel so sad and depressed. Whenever I get depressed I go for a walk, read a book, watch a funny movie. You have to make yourself get out of bed and feel better. Sometimes I even take a nice long bath!

sometimes you can't get over it yourself. talk to your mom. she understand what you are feeling. it does sound like you have at least some level of depression. meds aren't the only option if you talk to your mom. sometimes seeing a counselor can really help (i never thought it would and i was really hesitant to go myself). there are also groups to join. my best advice is to find someone (anyone) you can talk to about this.....keeping it yourself can only make it worse.
best of luck.
