because of their LACK of faith? Perhaps they are not able to consider science because if they allow themselves to think it will all fall down like a house of cards.

Fundamentalism, in my opinion, is the result of systematic indoctrination from a very early age.

These people are rewarded for accepting authority and punished for questioning their parents and teachers or using their brains to think.

It shuts down an essential part of their humanity, which is sad, as the only thing that truly distinguishes people from other animals is our ability to use thoughts to build better lives and change reality.

A human free to think, to create, and to grow is beautiful to behold. Fundies ain't beautiful.

That's overly simplistic. Generally, Christian fundamentalists are well-aware of scientific theories that differ from their beliefs. They believe, however, that they have more information than the scientists, and in a very real way they are correct.

That is, the scientist looks only for naturalistic explanations of the world around him or her. The fundamentalist is open to those explanations PLUS the possibility of supernatural explanations.

So if there is some event (such as the origin of life) that turns out to actually have a supernatural explanation, the naturalist is limited by his worldview to never discover it. The fundamentalist, however, can easily accept it.

If, on the other hand, there are events (such as photosynthesis) that have a naturalistic explanation, both the naturalist and the fundamentalist can accept it.

So the fundamentalist is, in effect, a better scientist because he or she does not have a priori limits on what they can accept as explanations.

If my analysis is correct, then it is, in fact, the naturalistic scientist who is afraid to consider theistic explanations because if they allow themselves to think, it will all fall down like a house of cards.

Good question.
The more I learn about science, the less atheist I become. I have faith that whatever I don't know, I am not supposed to know.
Science is the way to God.
Too bad religious fundamentalists and atheists are both blind in that regard.

You use FUNDAMENTALIST as a dirty word. I believe in the FUNDAMENTALS of the Word of God. Since I became a believer (read CHRISTIAN) in 1964, NO ONE and NOTHING has ever been able to shake my faith. The Bible has never been proven wrong SCIENTIFICALLY (or even HISTORICALLY, GEOGRAPHICALLY and ARCHAEOLOGICALLY) , so how could science shake my faith? Nothing in science is anti-God.
Biblical ignorance is a sad thing to see.
A scientist and God were having a discussion one day. The scientist said, "We have been able to make a man." God said, "Ok, let's see you do it". The scientist reached down and scooped up a pile of dirt. God said, "Uh, uh. Start with your OWN dirt."

I agree in some cases. In others though people simply adopt things without thinking. I think that is the majority. Or because of pressure from the environment they live in. Surely not an accident that religious opinions are not geographically random.

I think most fundies are so because they are afraid. Afraid to think for themselves. Afraid to consider something that might be challenging. Afraid to see that their "truth" may not be universal. When you hear many of them talk, it eventually leads to fear of going to hell or fear of living without God, so I'm just drawing my own conclusion...

Yes!!!
Its called insecurity and it manifests itself in dogmatic belief, chanting of incantations, sayings or proverbs, smugly putting down those with different beliefs and refusing to lisiten to rational argument for fear of being unable to answer intelligently.
Pity them, if you're a non-fundamentalchristian, pray for them and if you're an atheist, chickle about them behind their backs cause its so very very sad.

I like how you think. It could also be that many can't or won't think for themselves, either through early training or fear tactics.
