Actually, there are. Ghosts/poltergeists are energy, and need energy to do things. This is why people so often say that their hair stand up on end when ghosts are around, or they get a chill up their spine. It's an electro-magnetic reaction. If you're sensitive, you'll feel when one is near. Also, they tend to drain batteries very quickly to get energy. It is also very likely to be cold where one is trying to manifest.

As for tricks, no. If you're sensitive enough, you may be able to feel them or even see them (my high school was filled with ghosts, and had a lot of unexplained activity there) but usually there's no way to know they're there unless they somehow make their presence known.

Yeah, here's a trick that works every time. You ask yourself "is there any such thing as ghosts?". If you are in touch with reality, you rightly answer "no". Then you ask yourself "is there a ghost nearby?". And you answer, "in view of the fact that ghosts don't exist, the answer would have to be "no". Simple!
