You need to understand that 1. men are very simple, straightforward creatures (I'm sorry, but we are), and 2. to us, women are more complicated than anything else in creation. Given two equally intelligent men, ask one to figure out a woman and the other to figure out how to crack an atom in his garage, and the second man will come back with a fission reactor before the first one even figures out where to begin. It's just one of those mysteries of the universe...
As for talking on the phone, it's always awkward having that initial conversation, especially if you don't know all that much about the person. That's why, for me at least, meeting in person is that much better. It's easier to see if a certain topic is going well or failing, plus you get the body language factor. After you get to know each other, then the conversations come more easily. And while carrying on lengthy phone conversations has never been nor will ever be a "guy thing", we'll suffer through it for our ladies lol.

Well I for one thing have a hard time carrying on a conversation over the phone, not to mention I am quite busy outside of the house. I prefer email because it lets me get back to the girl at my earliest convenience and I'm the type of guy that thinks my answers through, so I find it easier that way.

I've dated a guy who called me every hour of the day and I've dated men who may call once a day and talk for like 15 mins.
It depends on whether he likes talking on the phone, how talkative he is, how much he likes you, and how busy he is. determine these things about your guy and you'll figure out his patterns and how much he likes you.
Like, my bf doesn't like talking on the phone when he is out of the house and if he does he wont talk for long. So he usually only calls when he is at home, but he's the kind of guy that's always on the go and never at home. So if I am not with him he doesn't call much. I can call but i keep it short. He'll talk longer when he is at home.

I don't think they are. I think we're adamant about talking on the phone. Women are more verbally expressive than men. We like to talk about everything. It has a lot to do with our brain chemistry and the way we are socialized from the time we are young. Think about it...we play house and have tea parties. We intereact with and talk to our dolls. They get on the floor an grunt with trucks and stuff. We're more verbal, and smarter. They usually don't know what to say. Take a look at the questions they ask on this site. They really don't have the verbal skills that women do.

Because many guys are not as verbal as you would like them to be. Being on the phone is out of their element and just brings frustration when they can't express themselves like they want.
Think of this, If you can only draw pictures and someone tells you to send a message with a tuba, you may not be able to use it well enough to get your point across.

Well, I'm a woman and I hate talking on the phone. I much prefer IM or email. Talking on the phone is too time consuming and that receiver thing hurts my ear.

While I can't speak for all men, my reason is I just don't like talking on the phone. I don't like having to hold it up and keep it pressed to my ear, and I can't concentrate on watching TV or whatever I'm doing like I can if I'm talking to someone in person.

Guys like to relate to a girl face-to-face. Seeing our expression as they chat us up is important, as they want to make sure they are impressing us in a manner that they feel will keep them in our good graces. Saying the wrong thing is embarassing and if they say something to p*ss us off they want to be able to see it right up front so they can apologize or leave us alone to stew.
