The restrictions is not on caliber so much as action. Any military or "assault" type weapon is banned, semi auto weapons are a no-no except in very rare cases.
Collectons perhpas.

M1 Garand Canada

Canadian law will not allow semi-automatic "Military Style" or Converted" Rifles in ANY caliber to be possessed or owned by Canadian citizens. It appears Canada is competing with the state of California here in the U.S. as far as restrictive private ownership of certain firearms.

FYI...Springfield Armory made a "Tanker" Model in 308 caliber post WW II, a short barreled conversion/re-barrel of the full size M1 Garand rifle. This gun was not military issue and was never used by U.S. troops during WW II.Springfield also manufactures a full size version and have for years now that is a full size M1 in 308 caliber(Current). You didn't mention which one you have so I thought you might like to know this. Either one doesn't make the "legal to own" list in Canada..

There are refitted M1's that are headspaced for .308 Winchester. The bullet is identical to the .30-06, the only difference in the cartridge is the maximum length of the casing, reduced from 63mm to 51.

The M14 loses approximately 200 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle, this requires the shooter to find his "Range Data" for the elevation knob. The numbers will not correspond directly as they are the M1 sights.

In Kuwait, shortly before we deployed, all the designated riflemen went and fired rounds until they filled data out to 500 meters. Some guys had 10 power scopes and could not hit a thing . . . I had iron sights and no problem.

My rifle is gone . . . I miss it so.

I'm also a bit shocked at the misinformation so far...if a low-end Garand is now $1500, well write me a check cuz mine are sold! While the Carbine is "cute" and light and has big mags available, it's never more than a spray-n-pray gun for shorter distances. Historical, yes, but may as well get an AK if shooting is the objective. The Garand is a real "Main Battle Rifle" that was intended and used by real infantry soldiers, with a full-powered rifle round and rate of fire and reloading that put fear in the hearts of it's enemies. It has power and range. For today's collector and shooter, the Carbine is popular as a novelty but the Garand is the one that real rifle shooters want and use in competitions. We shoot matches at 200 yards every month here and they are always full. I think that you will be much more satisfied with the Garand first. Look up The Civilian Marksmanship program, read the rules and get your order in...it is well worth the hoops you need to jump through.

I don't now if any one on here knows Canadian gun laws. you can own Garand's so long as they were grandfathered in. you cannot import new ones because semi auto center fire rifles and shot guns are limited to 5 rounds, the Garand holds 8. military still rifles ie AR style rifles are sold in Canada you just need a restricted license to buy them. I own a few semi auto guns. the problem with them is simply their magazine capacity. but the are in Canada they are just hard to find and expensive.

M1 Garands are .30-06 caliber but the M14 is .308 caliber. You might have these confused although they are both semi-automatic and probably illegal because of the action not because of the caliber.

Note to other answerers: Springfield Armory makes new M1 Garands in both .30-06 and .308.
