I'm 14 years old and I ate hard food and part of my left molar is loose on the side. It broke off but it is still attached to the gums just not the whole tooth. The thing is, i had a root canal on that molar.I don't have a crown there only a filling...The part that broke off is hurting like crazy I can barely eat, IT HURTS REALLY BAD. I thought the tooth is dead is it supposed to still cause pain? Can the dentist still save the tooth or will it result to extraction?
I'm gonna tell my mom to schedule a trip to the dentist later.

Please help and thanks.

Being only 14 the dentist will try to save the tooth. It all depends on how far down the root of the tooth has been fractured. After having root canal treatment, a tooth becomes dried out and after time can become quite brittle. This is why a tooth is usually crowned shortly after completing root canal therapy. A crown totally encases the tooth to protect it. The reason it is painful is because the tooth fragment is still attatched to your gum. even tho the tooth is dead the gum around the toothis still alive and will be tender when that loose fragment moves around. Maybe it could be saved with an amalgam crown, or if not a dental implant might be a posibility. Dont stress, i see this thing all the time. It can be fixed!

The dentist should be able to save your tooth. If there is enough tooth structure left then he can do a crown to protect the rest of your tooth from any further damage to the tooth. If there is not enough tooth structure then he will have to do a build up or even a post before the crown is done. It is always important to have a crown done once you have had a root canal because the tooth will become very brittle over time which will make it easier for the tooth to break or even split. If the tooth has split through the root then you will have to have the tooth taken out and have an implant or a bridge done.

HELLO CHIAKI,
THERE IS A VERY IMPORTANT REASON WHY A CROWN IS ALWAYS RECOMMENDED AFTER A ROOT CANAL.
THE TEETH BECOME BRITTLE AND CAN FRACTURE EASILY.
IF YOU STILL HAVE PAIN AFTER THE FRACTURE YOU MAY HAVE A BROKEN ROOT BELOW THE GUM AND THIS WILL NEED TO BE EXTRACTED. HAVE THE DENTIST EVALUATE THIS TOOTH FOR A POTENTIAL ROOT FRACTURE.
