So, I'm going to be a 'big sister' with big brothers big sisters, and was wondering if anyone had good (free or cheap) ideas of what I can do with my 'little'.
I've not been matched with a little brother/sister yet, but I'd like to have ideas ready for my bi-weekly hour visits. I've requested a little brother between the ages of 6 and 9. I'll be seeing them during school hours and will not be taking them from the property, so everything needs to be able to be done in either the library, playground, or classroom.
Thanks a ton!

Reading is an obvious choice, but what you read should be something completely fun and enjoyable for him. I think picking out a chapter book that you can read TO him might be nice. You can then be inspired by the book to come up with fun activities that correlate.

Any sort of crafts or projects would be fun too. It's probably best to get to know him first so you can find out what he's interested in. Maybe building one of those rockets (which isn't free, but you can buy them pretty cheap) or doing the Mentos and Diet Coke experiment (see Youtube) would be something he'd really enjoy. Get to know him first.

You're an awesome gal for becoming a Big Sister!

From the library, check out "You read to me I'll read to you", or "The Dangerous Book for Boys" and do some of the activities, like make paper airplanes. Play catch. Kick a ball around. Play tic tac toe. Watch the clouds and try to see things. Try to build a structure a foot tall that will support a book using only 30 sheets of paper and some tape (hint- fold or roll hte paper). Compete w/ another boy and his BBBS. Shoot hoops, or wastebasket hoops.

It's not WHAT you're doing, so much as you're there for him and giving him a grown up's undivided attention.

Pick out a book like was suggested, help with homework, boardgames and the like that can be done outside on the playground, or quiet ones inside, card games, just talking about day to day things that interests him, drawing pictures, writing little stories together, telling stories things like that, find out his interests and go from there!

Let him pick out a book. Read to each other. It'll make a big difference in his school work.
Play outside weather permitting.
Bring along an easy craft, like making cards.
