i work in a department store. in our area there are only 4 of us. anyway i asked my boss for time off because i am a college student and i have a week break before i start a new semester. he gave me the time off but on Monday i have to work 6pm to
close, so about 3 1/2 hours. i really don't want to go in on Monday. i don't have any family where i work/go to school, so basically all monday i would sit around in my apartment alone waiting to work. i have to drive home about 4 hours. if i go into work for those 3 hours i wouldn't get to leave until the next day. it seems really dumb to go into work for just 3 hours. it is really important for me to go home because i haven't been in 3 months, and i probably wont get to again for another 2 months. i know it wont be busy, and its only three hours to cover. I've never called in to work before. should i call in? and if so what should i say?
i know other people have called in but i always feel so guilty.

i've been working there since april of this year. and i dont really think i would be fired since one of our workers just got another job, so we're already going to be a little short staffed in a couple of weeks.

The really honest thing to do would be to tell the truth, you are homesick and you really need to go home, and see if you can get someone to cover for you. It would be especially helpful if you could trade shifts so that person wouldn't feel used.

Don't call in sick. Explain the situation and ask the shift off, or call your coworkers and see if you can trade (if it's short notice or if they don't want to, offering a slightly better 'return rate' may help, taking a couple more hours or at a less desirable shift :)).
If you can't get off in an honest way, just find something to do. Just not having any friends or family doesn't mean you have to be bored; find a book, rent some good movies, there are some fun games online, take a walk -if you're on the North half of our planet, it's going to be winter soon enough, if it's a nice day enjoy it. There are plenty of ways to keep yourself occupied; I generally have the opposite problem, I spent most of my time alone but I'm still always wishing there were twice as many hours in the day.

You really need to weigh the risks with the advantages. I mean, are you sure you won't get fired? And one other thing to consider - Your boss will probably know that you are not sick or something, and will know that you are taking the time off that you asked for but didn't get. That is going to possibly come off as "insubordination". How will your boss respond to that? Are you dependent on this job? If so, I would just work the 3 1/2 hours and go home the next day. If you depend on this job, it wouldn't be worth losing. Don't underestimate your boss's possible reactions.

3 1/2 hour shift is kinda lame. You didn't say how long you've worked there. If you've worked there less than 6 months, I wouldn't do it. These kinds of things can count against you for raises, etc. - and if you've been there less than 90 days, they can fire you. The other thing to look at is - if you've got the rest of the week off as "vacation" - you can be penalized for taking off the day before. (Some places are THAT petty.)
See if you can swap shifts with someone and work earlier in the day.
Save the calling in for when it won't be suspicious (this case looks like you want an extra vacation day.) and for when you REALLY need it.

So this job is about your convenience, not the fact that someone hired you to do the work they need done? Terrible work ethic, I hope you don't raise your children to be like this? Do you know what the word integrity means? Consider working on that admirable trait instead of being so whiny and self-centered. Believe me, when you "grow up", or if you do, you'll see that your boss was really being very kind to give you time off matching your school vacation.
Have you ever thought of using some of those hours you'd "sit alone" in your apartment, waiting to go to work, in some useful way? Perhaps even DONATING some time to help less fortunate, perhaps pay back society for some of the things you have taken as your due?
Wow, even below zero on the old sympathy meter.

Some day you will have a permanent job. Now would be a good time to start learning proper work habits. Call your boss ahead of time and tell him/her that you will be out of town and unable to work those hours. Don't lie about being sick or whatever. If possible, offer to find someone that you can trade shifts with so they won't be short-handed.

Have you attempted to find a coworker to cover the shift for you? PLEASE try to do this AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!
Please do not just "not show up" or "call in sick." Someone is going to be "paying the price" of your not showing up, and that person is not going to be very pleased with you when you return.
Next time you ask for time off, you will be more aware of this situation and be able to ask for that extra "up front" time you need... but for now, either FIND SOMEONE to cover, or WORK your shift and learn your lesson for next time.
Have a polite day!

Your boss has given you his answer. Consider explaining your situation to him and see if he will negotiate. Calling in isn't cool and would be obvious to your employer.
