A volunteer firefighter is just that, hes an unpaid volunteer. small towns and new fire departments that don't have a lot of money depend on neighbors helping neighbors, a community coming together to take care of their fire fighting problems when they are out of service area of a large paid fire dept.

i do no longer think of the city of Chicago has volunteers, they have all everlasting firefighters. i became a lieutenant and secretary of a volunteer unit out interior the boonies. We had approximately thirty adult males working for us simply by fact of paintings schedules, no longer all have been available each and all of the time. I additionally started the emergency call and rescue unit. We made calls whilst the ambulance became long previous someplace else. It takes a good style of coaching considering the fact which you are able to no longer get it suddenly, it took something like 4 years to get the right training to get examined and bypass, for the EMR it became approximately 2 years. Volunteers are by no ability given credit for each and all of the paintings they must put in simply by different jobs yet, they stand on my own. many times the bigger cities have an entire time hearth branch with finished time firefighters yet, this leaves each and all of the agricultural aspects open. seem out interior the country yet, many times you ought to stay interior the section and close for responding.

The volunteers in my home town get their water bill paid each month by the county, thats about all we can afford to do but they save a lot of property and I thank each and everyone of them for their sacrifice and dedication.

you get what is called 'stipend' pay ( I do not remember if I spelled that correctly though). It is to offset the expense for gas, but no you do not actually get paid.
