I think there should be a law that says you need to learn English, the drivers tests now are not only in English but Spanish, Somali, Russian, french, etc. Hello? The stop sign says stop in one language. My ancestors came to this country and learned English, people didn't bow down to them, why are we doing it now!!??

I would have to agree with another respondent, if learning English is required, then you are out. A comma should have come after the word "there", along with the modification of "should be a law" to something like "there, or should be a" to make the sentence look better, as well as to make sense.
To answer your question though, no, because that would rule out most foreign immigrants coming here legally. To stay here though, and to become a citizen, yes, learning English should be a must. I'll even take your idea one step farther, drop the Spanish on the labels of goods in the stores. Since we don't cater to the French, Germans, Russians, Chinese, Japanese, or any other foreigner that doesn't speak our language that comes here to visit, or to immigrate, why should we cater to the Mexicans? Has anyone noticed that there is no English on any of their products that we import from them? If they want to live here, then they need to learn English, if for no other reason than to read signs, and package labels.

Only if you are going to be working at a job where you need to speak to people.
Anyone with half a brain will learn some English sooner or later if they stay long enough.
My husband didn't speak English when he came to the USA as a refugee. It was the first thing after a job and place to live for him to do. He respects himself enough to learn the language of the land.He lived shortly in,Italy, France and Sweden and learned enough in one year in each country to get around and take care of himself.
I met him after he was in the USA only 1 1/2 years and could communicate with him enough to get married and start a life with him. You just have to want to do it.
My husband said in his opinion, it really takes a good 5 years to learn a new language well and that is with practice every day,i think if people try to learn we will be more willing to help them learn.

Immigrants from years ago, had to know and learn English. Children could not go to school, unless they could speak English. The early Norwegians had to learn to speak English and there was no other way. Norwegians do not demand that everyone learn their culture or language. So why do the Spanish have so many benifits ? Today I recieved a bill, from a well know company that I have business with and it was typed all in Spanish. I can't read or speak Spanish, so what now? Yes, there should be a Law and I hope there is a Law in regards to this. This is America and English is the Nations language.

1st of all, learning a new language is not easy. When I lived in Korea, it took me a year to get the feel of the language before picking up words easily. Unfortunately I left before I had a chance to get a basic competency in it.

2nd of all, we are not helping these people by catering to them by saying press one for English press two for Spanish.
You would be surprised how quickly a person would learn how to speak English if that was the only language in use around them. We should make it mandatory for everything except in special occasions to write everything in English.
Hell you cannot even buy food if you cannot speak the native language if you live in a foreign land. I know from experience. If I was hungry, I'd learn real quick too. I'd learn even quicker if I knew my buddies died in ER because they could not treat him because he did not speak English and could not tell the doctor what was the problem.

Maybe not a law, but a requirement for that so called "path to citizenship". First priority ought to be given those that care enough to learn the language of our country!

The pride of the American public school system...

You should always learn the language of another country before moving there, but that's not always a possibility, depending on the immigrant's circumstances.

At the very least, you should try your hardest to learn what you can beforehand, and become fluent after moving.

there should be a law yes but of course with all the politicans trying to get amensty here it would not work so well the reason we are being made to learn spanish is because we in the USA and Canada can communicate we speak english except for Quebec that is french in order for us to merge three countries into the North American Union there must be a common language and since it is to hard for the illegals to learn english then we must attempt to learn spanish
