Most people who say they believe in god, don't actually believe IN god, they believe in the BELIEF in god. All religious beliefs are very old. Those who believe in god and have religion as the guide, are believing the same things, (and viewing the world the same way) as those who lived long ago.

Christians say that the world has changed and the bible has stayed the same? That is my point, how can a book written by humans who lived long ago, when knowledge of the world was limited, offer any insights into the world. The world has indeed changed but religion keeps the world in the dark.

The last time religion ruled the world, it was called the Dark Ages.

That's all very true. Another thing that gets me is that it's only been the last few generations that have been able to read the bible. Illiteracy rates and the availability of the actual bible were very low up until the beginning of the 20th century. So here we are with a modern people for the first time being exposed to a primitive, archaic written work and being told as children that this is the truth.

The psychology of it, going deeper, is you can't believe in "God" unless you believe in a description of God made by man........ In other words, you can't be True in your belief unless you subscribe to a particular description of God made by mankind in general. When they tell you to search, they only mean to search the areas they have searched and you MUST come up with the same result as they do or else you are being lead astray by something else, or do not have a connection with said God, etc...

Actually, it wasn't until the last century or so that Religion quit ruling the world. All ancient civilizations were ruled by a "Son of God". Ceasars, Pharoahs, Kings of all nations claimed to be decended from their particular "God(s)" and therefore, by default, were run by religion.

Religion is changing as well... it's just that those who do not believe in any particular religion do not like how the change takes place. Paganism today does not deal with animal sacrifice to appease any Gods... it deals more with a personal psychology rather than any help from an outside source such as sacrifice. Even Christianity - ask a Christian if they believe owning a slave is moral and you will find many who will say it isn't, yet even the Bible claims it is perfectly all right. Granted some Religions have seemingly kept their followers in the dark, but one must realize that it is the Leaders of those Religions which enforce that in order to hold the power they have, rather than the Religion itself. And, the "book written by humans" doesn't offer any NEW insight but does reinforce certain ideas that even secular philosophers have stated, minus the idea that one Must believe in any God in order to obtain that knowledge ( which is silly ). A basic teaching *treat others as you want to be treated* was not original to Jesus. It's listed in the Old Test. Confucius said this very thing. Buddha stated it as well. It's not a new insight, just a repeat of something we all know.... Cause and Effect. That doesn't mean one has to believe in a God to understand this "insight" (if that's what you want to call it) but that teaching alone doesn't keep anyone in the dark.... again, it is the People who "run" the religion that keep people in the dark. All they need are a handful of blind followers to agree to it.

If you knew the Bible, you would never say what you just said.
The Bible is better news than the Media today. The latter days have been in the Bible for thousands of years. Not only do I believe IN God, but I believe God. I serve a living God and not a dead God.

i agree with you--the bible is outdated and someone should write a more modern form of teaching. I can see that the golden rule is still going to be a good one, but a few good teachings in a book don't mean the whole thing is going to be useful in another 2,000 years. Oh yeah, we won't be here, that's right.....
