I am looking for a "theme" of sorts, without doing the same ole thing you see in everyone's kitchen. My dishes and accessories are these colors: hunter green, olive green, black, brown, and tan. Any neutrals would be perfect, but I'm not sure of what to get. I was reading in an earlier post and liked the pottery idea. I have lots of cabinet top and wall space for decor and currently there is just ivy there. I need other ideas to brainstorm and still keep my colors as the dishes, etc are fairly new. thanks!

I understand the importance of a theme not changing but the dishes will. However, I am sick of what I have in my kitchen at the moment but can't really afford to buy all new canisters, dishes, etc right now, which is why I'm trying to come up with something that will allow me to keep everything I have but be able to redecorate.

Those colors would look good with an Egyptian theme. You don't see too many kitchens themed that way and there are lots of knick knack type things to be had at reasonable prices. (try TJ Maxx and Marshalls if in the US). Also a rain forest theme would work. How about a topical desert island theme, throw in some coconut shells, some sea shells and some palm tree stuff. Themes are great but what it comes down to is: the simpler, the better. Don't go over board. You might want to end up choosing just 2 colors (green and tan?)and going from there.
In our kitchen, we have a red theme. Simple maple cabinets, brass hardware, red coffee maker, red pots and pans, red towels. We threw a good amount of stainless steel in (appliances, air tight canisters, soap dispenser) to contrast. and some bamboo rugs in front of the sink and refrigerator that are very close in color to our cabinets.

How tall is the space above your cabinets?
Several large items is much better than a lot of smaller items.
Have shorter and taller items mixed so the eye goes up and down creating more interest in what is displayed.

Group in threes, or more, leave some empty spaces.

Baskets, wire baskets with various balls/decor for color, gourds, and framed/unframed art work sized suitably for the space.

You can really put just about anything you like to look at up there.

If you want to have a theme then select items that go with that - start with one or two items that you really like and use them for inspiration for the rest.

Place uplights on top of the cabinets for drama at night. They come in a 8" metal can for 40-60 watt lights and u can usually find a way to plug them in somewhere.

I'm not a fan of themes in any kitchen. The kitchen should be simple and elegant and should certainly not revolve around any dishes you might choose. Whether you choose a country kitchen, a contemporary, or traditional, your dishes may change but your kitchen design does not. My dishes are in the cabinets and change quite frequently according to my mood. My kitchen does not. I design my kitchens around their over all look for the design of my home not a dish pattern.

I have old crocks, olive oil filled bottles etc. above my cabinets, I also laid a section of rope lites and put ivy over it. Very cool effect. Try something visually attractive in your window treatment. Bamboo blinds, shutters, or plantation blinds. Maybe a back splash in tile.

Antique White will look good with those colors you have. It even goes good with everything else.
