I went to donate blood for the Red Cross yesterday and fainted during the process. Why does losing blood (only arond a pint or so) cause some people to faint and not others?

Neither am I squeemish nor am I anemic....I'm just wondering what chemisty in your body makes you pass out because of losing a moderate amount of blood.

The local Red Cross people are taught about that sort of thing before they go out on blood drives. That's why they also have snacks and drinks for those who donate.

That's just how it is for some people. The average person, if I remember correctly, has about 8 quarts of blood in his body. So a pint is a pretty large fraction, especially from someone who is almost anemic or who has low blood pressure.

Some people pass out at the sight of blood, especially their own. You may be one such type person. You could have been dehydrated, which would cause your passing out. Bottom line is to get checked out prior to giving blood again.

ive donate ten times, but the last time I almost fainted, i think it depends on how fast your blood is pumping as i lied and came straight from the gym, its caused by lack of blood to the head.
