most atheists i have talked to had a similiar path to their beliefs:

were raised in religious/semi-religious families and at around 10-13 started to question these beliefs

has anyone here been a very religious person later in life and then switched sides? has anyone been a convinced fundie and then given up?

Part of it's right. I was a theist for most of my childhood (by that I mean I believed in a god, and would sometimes pray), became an agnostic at the age of twelve, and now, two years later, I'm an atheist. Both my parents are agnostics, though, and I didn't ever go to church. My parents were smart enough to let me choose a belief on my own.

As a young child, I believed the Bible was not to be taken literally, that there was no proof that the Old Testament version of God ever existed (and He seemed kind of mean to boot). And even though I have been a vegetarian since I was 3, I had no problem taking communion because I knew that it did not actually become Christ's body and blood.
So I would say I started questioning the Catholic faith at a very early age- or maybe I was Buddhist long before I called myself Buddhist.

I was never a religious person and was born into a family that wasn't either.

However, to say I am religious now? No, I do not consider Buddhism to be a religion and nor do many followers. It's a great label for us, but really, it's merely a label, we're all human.

I do meditate, I do attend a church, as of recently, but this is to be around like minded people. I do not sit and smile and nod and accept everything I hear. If I did, I wouldn't be practicing Buddhism, I'd just be following it. I was always Buddhist, I just never knew it.

I knew an ex-minister when I lived in Columbus. He was a real fire and brimstone preacher till he was almost 40. But you are right, it is usually 7-16. I figured it out when I was 10.

Sam Kennison is another example of that. He was a preacher before he lost his faith and turned to comedy. Too bad he tried to make up for all the stuff he missed early in life.

I was never a fundie, but it took me a very long time to switch side and I am not there yet (on the atheist shore).

I was raised in a totally non-religious family, went to Catholic school, and survived both. Your hypothesis is flawed.
