My mom wasn't too happy when I told her I didn't believe in god and didn't consider myself Jewish anymore. At first she didn't think I was serious, I guess, but now she knows that I am. The only person I won't be telling is my 94 year old grandmother because I don't want to be the reason she dies from a heart attack.

No one. My husband's an atheist, I consider myself a Secular Humanist, I'm also a member of the Church of the Sub Genius, and was born a Jew ( if you're Jewish by birth, you're ALWAYS Jewish). It wouldn't affect my moral code, I don't think that you need to believe in God to be a moral person at all.

Well so far only my friends know that I am an Atheist and they are some what OK with it. However, my family will be confused and question why I do not believe in god and to explain myself would be a waste of time since they are old school.

Only me.... (& possibly my girlfriend as a result of my change in attitude)
Afterall... the only difference between myself and the average atheist is that they limit their disbelief to certain things.... while I do not. They just don't give consideration to many other things I have thought at length about and decided likewise to deny.
As such... for me to become one of them would require not so much accepting those things I denied, but becoming more agnostic about them... or simply not thinking about it at all.
I'd rather not, thanks.
I'm too far in to start simply blanking out the awkward fact that existence as we know it is devoid of purpose or definition...

Only the people I know from the South will get upset. They find it offensive that anyone has a belief different from their beliefs.
Atheists are not belevers in a philosophy, so it's that you "chose" atheism.

A lot, and they should be. I would be upset too if someone I loved suddenly said "well, I think I'll choose to spend eternity in hell!"

Not applicable. I am already an atheist and no one gives a flip insofar as I can tell.

When people truly abandon God, will they then be surprised to find that God has abandoned them in life?
Good riddence, the future will in no way benefit from your eternal existence.

I don't know about "upset," but they'd most certainly all be shocked. I think my parents would be disappointed and my boyfriend would be concerned since he knows how important my faith is to me. The rest? *shrug*
