Two of the gospels claim that both thieves reviled Jesus--one of them claims that one reviled him and the other begged forgiveness--and the fourth doesn't mention them. I've heard some theories that both thieves started out reviling him but then one changed his mind, but that doesn't ring true.

So which account is false?

All of them. He never existed. the Jesus story was made by combining earlier pagan myths.

All four gospel accounts mention that Jesus was not crucified alone:

Mt 27:44
Mk 15:27
Lk 23:32
Jn 19:18

Sometimes they are called thieves, sometimes revolutionaries. We'd need a biblical scholar and an linguistics expert to help us deal with the connotations of the wording in the original texts.

All that aside, remember that the four gospels that got included in the bibles were passed down through different channels, based on different sets of source material, and intended for different audiences.

In short, who knows? More importantly, why does this matter?
