every time i fed my cat when she was a kitten i rang a littlle bell (like the ones on the collars) and now she comes running when i ring the bell , however you run the risk of the cat being on the other side of the busy road when you ring the bell and that would be v. bad, you could try and change the time you feed them to when you want them in , they may just turn up at the door at that time ,it may take a week or two but it's suprising how quick they catch on(especially when there is food involved!) Good luck anyway.

Try changing her feeding time so that if she wants fed she has to come in at - say 6 or 7pm. Then don't let her out again. she will soon adapt to the new routine and be waiting to get her feed. If you bang a spoon off her dish before feed times then when she is not there and you do this, she will probably appear. It's all a matter of routine.

We're like you, we bring our cats in at night. We save their favourite food until then and it works most of the time. When it doesn't, we try again after 15-30 minutes, and the cat's usually waiting for us to open the door.

I have found 2 things that work:
1. stand just outside your front door and rattle a box of cat biscuits
2. during the day, cook your cat some fish or kidney or liver in your microwave. Then your cat will learn to associate the "ping" of the microwave with his favourite food. When you want him to come in at night, open the front door so your cat can hear, and then make your microwave go "ping"

My cats have always come in to me whistling.
If any of them play up then I turn all the lights off & go back about 10 minutes later & try again - 98% success rate with that!

I've been having the same problem with my cat! I've now got into the habit of removing his food at 7pm and when he keeps popping in he realises its not there and goes out again! Then when i want him in I just stand by the door, shout his name and tap his bowl, he soon comes running in!!!

Try only feeding her at night. Offer her a cat of wet food to make it a treat. This might want to make her want to come in and she'll be more ready to lay down and sleep with a full tummy.

Definitely try the laser pen... our ginger kitten hates coming in to bed as i dont let them out over night. The only thing that works is to use the laser pen to entice him in.
Works every time although he does sulk when he realises he has been tricked!

~Don't let her out in the first place.
~Get a cat proof fence to keep her in and don't bother getting her in at night.
Really, wandering loose isn't good for her. Someone could swerve to hit her, just as easily as she could get hit in the street.
I won't even mention getting mauled by dogs, children, predatory birds, etc.
Sickness is also a large concern.
