From what I can tell, an evangelical refers to a belief system based upon the 16th century reformers, Calvin and Luther.. A fundamentalist refers to a counter-movement to modernism. The fundamentalist movement began in the early part of the 20th century.

While doctrinally they are essentially the same, most evangelicals believe themselves to be more intellectual than the fundamentalists. A fundamentalist is characterized by knowing what he believes, but cannot explain the theology in detail. An evangelical will not only explain what he believes but will throw in a little history, and then explain why your beliefs are illogical.

It's the difference between a square and a rectangle. Fundamentalists are Evangelicals, but not all Evangelicals are Fundamentalists. Evangelicalism is a little bit broader and less rigid in scope. The main differences you'll see have to do with how literally they take the Bible and their views on the end times and on atonement. Other than that, they roughly coincide.

Peace to you.

Well, just look at the names.

An evangelical is one who evangelizes. That means that the e. will go out and try to proselytize, to actively spread the word of her/his preferred faith. The opposite of a fundamentalist would be an esoteric, one who believes that religion is a highly personal thing that is best pursued in private, to be shared readily with no one.

A fundamentalist believes in a very narrow interpretation of religion and is intolerant of any who disagree. The opposite of a f. would be a freethinker, a person who insists that all are entitled to express their beliefs in any way that does not compromise anyone else's right to express beliefs.

Note that linguisitically the terms are standard. The -al suffix in evangelical indicates one who engages in an activity (evangelizing)--as is seen in pontifical, rhetorical, maniacal (lol), and -ism indicates a system of belief, as in existentialism, humanism, fascism, racism, feminism.

A slight difference in the level of brainwashing skills. One brainwashes by fear, that would be the fundamentalists and the other by superstition, that would be the evangelical.

Sort of like the difference between a guy who thinks he's Napoleon and one who thinks Squirrels are disguised aliens and trying to kill him.
