most people think that the catholic church was the 1st christian church, it wasn't, in the early 1st century the christian congreation (know as a sect which Paul (saul) was determined to wipe out) ) consider this meeting at Jerusulem about 30 yrs after Jesus death where JAMES the brother of Jesus spoke for the group or governing body
(Acts 15:12-21) . . .At that the entire multitude became silent, and they began to listen to Bar′na‧bas and Paul relate the many signs and portents that God did through them among the nations. 13 After they quit speaking, JAMES answered, saying: “Men, brothers, hear me. 14 Sym′e‧on has related thoroughly how God for the first time turned his attention to the nations to take out of them a people for his name. 15 And with this the words of the Prophets agree, just as it is written, 16 ‘After these things I shall return and rebuild the booth of David that is fallen down; and I shall rebuild its ruins and erect it again, 17 in order that those who re

Pope just means father. The office of Pope is really Bishop of Rome. Peter was an Apostle. He would have appointed Bishops to have authority over a city or region. It was several centuries after Peter that the Bishop of Rome claimed seniority over other bishops. So did the leaders of the Eastern church.

That Peter was the first Pope, is a belief the Catholics have always promoted. OK, he was a great man and he did understand doctrine of the early Christian Church, better than most people. Peter could have been the first Baptist, or first Methodist etc. What difference does that make. It does not affect my salvation or yours or the salvation of any one else.

The body of believers that followed Christ and that worshiped Him after His death and Resurrection did not have a name. I think that is great, otherwise we would all want to be called by that name. You might note however, that little emphasis was put on the mother of Christ by the early believers. Does that ring any bells?

To CJ:
You shouldn't talk about things you don't understand. "Infallible" doesn't mean that the Pope can sin - he's a human after all - it means that he cannot teach false doctrine! Please! This is basic! Get it straight!
And what does his having been married have to do with anything?
