Barn door was left open for the corporate profits years ago. How can we protect the planet now? OK. Prevent bilge flushing. Prevent nuclear fuel reprocessing, and nuclear waste disposal. End coal fired power. Use WPA to install solar and wind arrays to feed the grid. Shut the auto makers down, and put that army to work restoring the forests, wetlands. Shut the polluters down. Give up on the urban myth, with higher oil costs, we cant just drive to work and sit idling in jams anymore!

5. Use less water (shorter baths and showers)
6. When your in the shower/bath and for example want cooler water, don't add more cold, subtract less warm.
7. Try to buy items with not much packaging that you will have to throw away. (Just try to limit your garbage in general)
8. Don't use harmful pesticides (there are plently of all-natural and gentle pesticides)

Most of us in the U.S. use far more than our share of energy. Compare our average consumption (8.4 TOE) with the average of the industrialized world (4.7 TOE) and the developing world (0.8 TOE). Every one of us here is responsible for the looming crisis.
My wife and I recently looked at ways to reduce our own environmental impact. We analyzed every aspect of our consumption. We discovered that through a few simple changes like CFLs, turning off computers and appliances when not in use, heating with wood (we live in the country where dead wood is plentiful), and driving less, we could reduce our carbon emissions by 70%. That's without spending extra money. 70%! The remaining emissions could easily be offset by planting 500 trees.
If we also invested in renewable energy, a root cellar, a hybrid auto, etc., we could cut our current usage by 85%. But it would cost well over $70K-- not so feasible.
Eating local food and buying local products also help reduce environmental impact. So does avoiding unnecessary plastic trash like plastic grocery bags and individual packaging. If we had mass transit, using it would save a bundle, but it doesn't exist out here in the boonies.
Any significant shifts in how we do business will eventually have economic impact. Most food and other goods are delivered by the labor-intensive trucking industry. To use entirely local products would put over 2 million truck drivers out of work, not to mention supporting jobs.
Eventually we'll need to deal with changes like that, either gradual or sudden. But for the time being, if every one of us reduced our energy consumption by 70%, we'd have a lot less environmental problems to deal with!

You can "call" your local officials & tell them to stop giving $ to corporations to move into town, which then use this $ to pay for their pollution fines. Also, get rid of incandescent and fluorescent lighting and install LED where you can. Buy a composting toilet & make it your primary toilet. Have outside lights set up with motion sensors. Tint windows throughout your house. Have shake 'em flashlights handy & get rid of battery flashlights. Cover your roof with plants(this takes planning). Don't use pesticides, use natural ingredients. Use local honey in place of sugar where viable(this also helps with allergies). Buy locally produced foods. That's just a start, I could go on for pages! :)
