They sleep a lot and are awake at night, so be prepared for noisemaking! Never stick your finger up to it, it might bite to see what it is. Be gentle and sweet! They are great little critters.

Well What type of cage do you have? is there a wheel for him to play in? Climbing activities. I recommend a large cage, either premade Hampster cages or make your own. A large fish aquarium with ladders, wheels and caverns/tunnels, a couple of small houses for him. I believe that a pet should have a big home with lots of activites. Also cuddle him daily. A friend had a hamster and she always took him out of his cage daily and loved on him. She also took him swimming in her pool and bathed him every two weeks. She carred him around with her all the time. the dog and cat even warmed up to him. He got so that he stayed on her lap or on her books while she did her homework. He would stay on her shoulder during meal times or tv time.

My sisters hamster is named Hammy... We call him Hammy Houdini b/c he always manages to escape from his cage. He's a little explorer. Get it a ball to roll around in... they love those. Maybe a wheel if there is room in his cage. They can b really loveable too. Hammy likes grapes, and long walks on the beach.

you should try to keep your new pet in a quiet place till it gets use to you. offer it treats when it's awake to hand feed so it gets use to you. talk to it softly so it gets to know your voice. they move really fast when they're young so hold it close to the floor when holding it for the first few times till you get use to each other. they like just about anything. use to have mine up in the kitchen so the cat didn't bug it much, it would always be staring at us when we ate, we shared everything. you can give it an empty paper towel tube to hide in. they have those clear balls too that you can put it in so it can run around your room safely so it doesn't get lost or stepped on.

i have some tips from my previous answers, but to save you some effort to go into my answers, here are my tips:
~NEVER use cedar chips, its harmful to your little hammy
~DO NOT make fluff with something like toliet paper or tissue paper, if your hamster eats this, it gets stuck in her mouth and she could die
~wash your hands before you hold her, because if you hands smell like food, she might think you are food, and might bite you
~the cage debate:
wire cages have a good airflow, but they usually are harder to clean, they come with a water bottle, food dish, and a wheel, tanks are a little small, but they are easier to clean, they smell a little worse because not as much air flow is going in, so washing them becomes a regular chore along with cleaning the cage, you also have to buy your own water bottle and wheel and food dish
~buy a hamster ball! hamsters like to have the freedom to run about, they run about 3 miles a night in the wild! the first couple of times she won't know what she's doing, so she may not seem to enjoy herself, but she will get used to it after about 5 times, leave her in the ball for about 30 minutes, but not for too much longer, she will be thirsty!
~the first couple of days you have her, let her get used to their new surrounding for about 2-3 days, the hamster will be scared of the new enviroment, so if you try to pick it up she will probably bite you
~the first couple of times you hold her, don't hold it for more than 10 minutes, it takes some time for her to get used to your smell, after awhile she will get used to you, and you can hold her longer, she also might be hyper because shes still little, don't hold her for long if shes hyper
~ its best to put them in a closet with the door not shut all the way or outside of a room at night, because she will be running on the loud wheel or chewing on the wires of the cage, if you choose to get that type of cage
if want more adivce or have specfic questions feel free to email me

Check out this site:
http://www.hamsterific.com/HamsterUniversity/HamsterUniversity.html
It has a lot of info on hamsters for first time owners!
Also, advice for if it gets lost:
put out food in little containers in the corners of rooms. usually, you can find them in no time snacking on the food!
