its a developmental disorder, its largely genetic although it may be passed on from someone who does not show signs of adhd, some studies have concluded that it is caused by chemical imbalances in the brain.

It cannot be cured but can be treated with medication which is the easiest, most cost effective solution (although the medication used can have serious side effects, there is also the possibility of dependence, abuse, and some parents dont like the idea of 'drugging' their child) most commonly used is ritalin (methylphenidate [i think thats right] this is generally quick release and has to be taken throughout the day. There is also another one called concerta xl which is slow release this may be used to prevent abuse of the medication. Pshycotherapy, changes in diet, and supplements can also help.

It is not a simle procress to diagnose adhd some people can go undiagnosed for a long time, some people have been wrongly diagnosed but with any neurological condition it is always diffilcult to pin point exactly what the condition is. Although generally ADHD has a very distinctive effect on a persons behaviour.

Dont have any statistics, sorry. But both my brothers have adhd and ive done quite a few studies on it and several presentations.

From what I know. My son has ADD. Adhd is the hyper activity in having ADD. It was a very difficult thing to diagnose.
I went back and forth between the school and his doctor. Finally in 2nd grade I got him on Ritalin, which wasnt very good, because he had to take more at lunch, and when it wore off it gave him headaches. Same in the evenings. Now he is on Adderall XR and it has helped out a great deal. we have done experiments from days he takes it and days he doesnt and his attention span is alot different. Which is what the medication is for. To help with the paying attention in school. Some kids have more of a cant sit down long enough to pay attention which is more of the hyper activity thing. as far as web sites, I recommend just doing a google search for ADHD and ADD. Maybe even some doctors web sites may have information. There could also be some books if you go to like Amazon and look up medical books for ADD/ADHD and see if that helps you out any. Good Luck!
