I've just started taking a class and its been recommended I purchase my own camera. 35mm is the only requirement, I'm open to any and all suggestions at this point.

If you are going to make this first camera the beginnings of a more complete system, you should think about which of the lens mounts you select.

Nikon, Canon and Pentax have all now retained their current lens mount for over two decades. In the case of the Nikon F mount and the Pentax K mount, other camera body makers use this lens mount to give them access to the range of lenses that are available.

Currently, Canon seems to have the largest range of lenses available, with Nikon close behind. Pentax has a decent range of current lenses, but is well behind the other two.

If building a photography system is not you key interest now, then you might want to consider some of the more classic cameras, such as the older manual focus Canon (FD mount), Olympus, Minolta, etc. These were all very good cameras in their day, although many of them are now a quarter of a century or more old, and you will need to be careful to get one that is working properly.

Minolta SRT-202 with an MC ROKKOR-X 50mm f1.4 or f1.7

Pentax K1000 with 50mm f1.4 or f1.7

Canon FTb with 50mm f1.4 or f1.7

Should be able to find them on ebay. Look for a seller with a very high Feedback Score. Ask if the battery compartment is clean and if the light meter works and if the lens is free of fungus or haze and if the diaphragm is smooth and oil-free.

I'd recommend a Nikon N90s. They can be found cheap, will work with all the lenses from that era plus the modern ones.

Look in the following places for a used one:
www.ebay.com
www.calumet.com
www.bhphoto.com
www.beachcamera.com

I started with a Cannon Rebel and it was great. It has basic manual and automatic settings that are very easy to use.

Pentax K1000. My mother used it for her basic photo class, and had success with it; it's small, easy to handle, everything is well-placed
