Zion '67, If I take a leap of faith just because of a chance that hell might exist, don't you think god would know I was being a hypocrite?

EnglishBob, lighten up and don't be an ***. I wasn't being ignorant, I was posing a hypothetical question.

suzie s, you strike me as being enlightened, I hope your version of god is the truer one if there is one.

Here to serve, what happens if Jesus got the wrong end of the stick and his version of god is tragically wrong? As an outsider I'd have to consider this.

Orpheus Rising, I think I see what you mean, hell is here on earth and we make it ourselves. More psychological than damnation from above. I think you've moved the playing field from religious toy to real people, which I feel might be more semiotic kidnapping. Interesting though.

Just a final thought, here's John 3:16
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life."
Going by that, there is no afterlife hell, since that would mean eternal life for us atheists too, even though in suffering.

I think you're maybe joking but you ask a good question nonetheless. I think it is very possible to be in hell already. I would refer you this question's Best Answer:

It has more to do with suffering, and the projection of one's own suffering onto others, than about eternal punishment.

Peace to you.

Maybe - and if that's the case - hell is ok for me.I am lucky enough to have a nice life, good friends, a great life partner, good job, and a fairly (for now) successful footy team - oh! and the best grandson anyone could wish for - if that's hell - give me more!!

I do not believe that atheists do not get into heaven, God would not stop a good person going to heaven
I have met so called Christians who are nothing like a Christian, even though they go to Church every Sunday, I for one would not trust them.
Give me a good atheist with a kind heart anytime as I am sure that would be what God would want.

Heaven and Hell are both states of Being. The Kingdom of Heaven is within is pointing to this fact.

You can still receive Gods grace and mercy here on earth;in hell you are eternally seperated.
Take a leap of faith,if you're right then you have nothing to lose, yeah?
If you're wrong..you will curse yourself for eternity for not listening to your conscience.

No, at the moment hell is unoccupied. It's first occupants will be the beast, the false prophet and Satan but that doesn't happen until the end of time.

Who said hell is the absence of God?

2007-09-22 17:53:28 · answer #7 · answered by Rachel Maria 6 · 0 0

The statement "hell is the absence of god" is a christian fallacy, designed (like all dogma) to keep the faithful sheep in check (ie fearful). So you can, in your ignorance, apply it to me (an atheist) if you like. That doesn't make it true.
