Humphry Davy
In 1802, Humphry Davy created the first incandescent light by passing current through a thin strip of platinum, chosen because the metal had an extremely high melting point.
Unfortunately it was not bright enough nor did it last long enough to be practical.
In 1879 Thomas Edison invented the first practical incandescent lamp. His was the first commercially viable light bulb.

Humphrey Davy, and Warren De la Rue. Davy was the first to pass a current through a filament and De la Rue was the first to enclose the filament in a vacuum tube. Edison, though widely credited with the invention, only worked on finding a filament that would last and was cheap enough to be practical.

Thomas Edison.
A few others contributed ideas that led up to it though - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incandescent_light_bulb
Its one of those things, with all the other discoveries in place, someone would have discovered it if not Edison. He just spent more time experimenting with different filament materials than anyone else.
