If you are using the guillotene type nail clippers shown here http://www.petedge.com/Master-Grooming-Tools-Cat-Nail-Trimmers-TP268.pro You want to put the dogs nail through the hole so that the blade is facing up. The one in the picture is also shown in this position. This is so you can see where the blade is going to trim the nail. Turn it the other way and you won't be able to tell as easily where the cut will be which can easily lead to an Ouch for the dog.

Make sure you don't accidentally cut the quick, this is the blood supply for the nail and it will bleed if you do. Keep some flour or cornstarch in a small shallow dish nearby just in case. If you do cut the quick you can dip the tip of the nail in the flour or cornstarch to stop the bleeding.

If your dog has clear nails you should be able to see the quick running through it, it will appear as a pinkish line. If your dog has dark nails you'll have to gradually clip the nail. Make a small cut, then look at the tip. When you are getting close to the quick you will see a small white dot in the center. Stop trimming. http://www.tiaspetplace.com/nailtrim.html

Make sure to give your dog lots of treats and praise during nail clipping, and end with a fun game. A lot of dogs don't like having their nails trimmed, so the more positive you make it, the easier it will be. If you are just starting out, only trim a nail or two, then another nail or two the next day. Gradually work your way up to trimming nails on all four feet. You don't want to push it and make your dog afraid of nail trimming time.

The dog's nail enters thru the whole of it and it, and make sure you cut it where the curve starts on the dogs nail
