and I'm scared -- as soon as school is over he's probably going to Iraq (they say) and that is not what I want for him but then again, all he wants to do is protect his country, etc. What are your thoughts on this? Have kids in Iraq? He's so intelligent it's not even funny -- I wish I had his brains (yeah, his mom saying this).....I'm proud of him and I'm also scared. He is my baby.....they say he's not MY baby anymore...... :(

I was a Hospital Corpsman for twelve of my twenty five years in the Navy. Eight of those twenty five years were spent with Fleet Marine Forces. Tell him you read a message from an old "Doc" who wishes him well and also counsels him to follow every bit of learning he acquired at Field Medical Service School. Especially the two weeks of infantry training. May God watch over him and return him to safety and comfort of his loved ones.

I seriously doubt your son will be going anywhere right out of HM "A" school except to the fleet or to a shore duty station or possibly a "C" school. IDC's (Independent Duty Corpsman) are not your run-of-the-mill HM's. These are 4-0 sailors that have some time under their belts and some experience before shipping them off to a war zone. If I were a Marine in country, I sure the hell wouldn't want a "boot" as my doc that didn't have the experience or the knowledge that comes with it out in the field with me doing the patchwork if needed, where they're more of a liability than an asset. IDC's have extensive training before they're allowed to go out on their own. They have to be able to do some very difficult tasks without any guidance whatsoever. That's not going to happen with a boot right out of "A" school.

My baby jumps out of perfectly good airplanes for the Army. Yours will always be your baby, too. Unfortunately, now the government owns them. We gotta let go, mom.

I feel your pain and distress. My son is a college grad with a 3.89 GPA, and is currently serving with the Army in Iraq. But it's what he wanted to do and I applaud him for serving our country and joining the brave fraternity of military patriots. I served 22 years in the Navy, my wife and one son are Army vets, another son is serving aboard a Navy ship, and Matt is in Iraq.

Please thank your son for his service to our country and welcome to the family of military parents.

Don't worry too much! Marines will take care of him and watch out for him, I can promise you that much! Just be supportive, write plenty of letters, send care packages to when he's there and ultimately let him know you and other people love him and are waiting for his safe return. We marines treat corpsman like one of our own so don't worry bout him mom! Just be ready to welcome him home with plenty of home cooking and love.
