I have not joined the military yet because im still too young but yes I have had people tell me I should not. I think there will always be those people who are just aganist it and there's nothing we can really do. But if it's what you really want to then you should not let anyone stop you.

Sure. But at the time I joined, it was either enlist or be drafted later, provided you were male and healthy and over 18. This was some years ago, if you hadn't caught it. But,yeah, a lot of people were saying "don't do it". Their reasons were obvious. They didn't "like" the war that was going on at the time. Nobody likes war, but you have to make a decision on your own. I did not "volunteer" for Vietnam, but I was sent there. My job was to help get wounded soldiers out of the area and back to a hospital. I did the job to the best of my ability. Many friends died doing the same job. I would do it again...and again.

I think family and friends supported me... especially my grandfather.
But there were a few dire predictions... some when I joined... some when I chose my specialty, and some when I decided to make it a career.
But I figure that eople who trash your ideas to improve yourself do so because they're embarrassed that they haven't the same courage or foresight. They do the same whether it be choce of career, choice of school, choice of mate.
I figure I have to live with me for the rest of my life. I can't structure my life on the whims of the spineless and nay-sayers. I have to look at myself every morning. If I do something that makes the person looking back a me miserable just because somebody else thinks I should... that person looking back at me won't let me forget it.

YESSS!!! More than ever. For my husband, and myself. But they just want what is best for you, and they want you to stay safe. When in reality, anything that you do in life has risks. Joining the military isn't the only thing that has risks in life. If you want to serve your country, I say go for it, and good luck. Not many people can.

I had one old geezer tell me to think twice because I might have to take orders from (audible gasp here), COLOREDS! Yes, dinosaurs still roamed the Earth in 1977. Needless to say, I did enlist, did take orders from all shapes, sizes and colors of leaders, and never had a problem with it. If only society at large were as enlightened as our military in that respect...

Yes I did. I told them where else can I get a job, get money for college, travel, free room and board and clothing at age 17, that usally got them to stop trying to change my mind.
My parents were supportive only because they are both retired Air Force. I loved all 8 years of my Army time.

Yes, everyone said you will be sorry. Well, let me tell you this! I loved every single year I served in the Navy. I am now retired, living on a great pension, along with SSDI for multiple sclerosis, and I am all of 53 years old.

A big yes on that one, my Mom and Dad both thought that it was a bad idea. As well as my Grandparents and Aunts and Uncles. My girlfriend was extremely shock up about it because she had a good friend of hers die in Iraq and didn't want me to go. But once I got out of boot camp my family has been extremely supportive. My Mom and my girlfriend are still weary but they atleast support me.

Nope- they all knew I was a patriot and a killer. That and I was following an HONORED tradition in my family. I hope my son does too when he's old enough.
Plus I couldnt help it. Both my parent were in the Navy and I was born at Pearl Harbor. I was BORN in the Navy and was honored to serve.

There is always one hippie pussy in every family that will say no, I had three in mine. But no matter if you come from a far left family, far right family or a family square in the middle, your Mother will always say, "No!" before you go and, "I'm really proud of you, I just said no because I didn't want you to leave for thirteen weeks," after to you graduate (become a Marine) in my case.
