Keep her away from all male dogs (preferably in an easy-to-clean room) and get her spayed AS SOON AS SHE IS OUT OF HER HEAT CYCLE.

Edit: If she is already having her first heat cycle, then she is plenty old enough to be spayed (it can be done as early as 4 months). She is not having a "period", it is much different than human menstruation. She is probably not whining because of pain, but because she wants out to find a male.

She shouldn't be in discomfort, although her behavior can change. She can be more hyper, or seem sort of depressed. The only thing you need to do is keep her away from males for three weeks. He help with the mess, you can put a doggie diaper on her, or a pair of little boy's boxers (sticking her tail out through the fly).

Some vets will perform a spay during heat, some will not. It's a bit tougher for the vet to perform during heat, with the extra blood flow. But either, way spaying is a good idea. Speak to your vet.

Get her spayed as soon as she is out of heat. I was puppy-sitting a Yorkie a few years ago who had not been spayed. She had just gone out of heat (or so the owners thought) and developed pyrometria (sp) (a uterine infection due to not being spayed)! Her fever jumped to 106, she became lethargic and her owners were 700 miles away! I took the pup to their family Vet as soon as the doors opened but no Dr. was scheduled to arrive for another 2 hours. I immediately took her to my Vet where they hooked her up to IV fluids and started antibiotics. I later took her to the Emergency Surgical Hospital where they removed her uterus kept her on IV fluids & antibiotics in the ICU. Five days and $2500.00 she was released from the hospital. Get her spayed!

How would you like to help her? You could by tablets to help her not be so attractive to entire males. You could by a spray to mask her odour from them. You could but dog pants to stop her bleeding over your home. You should let her have peace and quiet at home, and ensure she gets NO time outdoors unsupervised - bi tches can become hussies, even though it's the dogs who always get the blame.
Please do get her spayed - most vets agree that roughly three months after a season is the safest time, but, be guided by YOUR vet.

She's not in any pain, really. But she is feeling hormonal and can go from cranky to downright puppyish real quick. Just keep a really good eye on her so no boys have their way with her and schedule her surgery with your vet now. Let them know how long she's been in so they can time it correctly, although my pug was in heat when she was spayed and it was just fine.
