Depends on where you get it. Fleshy areas done won't hurt so much. Ex: Shoulder, Thigh, etc. But places where the bone is close to the skin are painful. Ex: Top of the foot, back of the hand, etc.

From my experience they hurt mostly on skin closer to bone. For example, ankle back of neck, shoulder and in the bend of the elbow.
To me, the worst I have felt is similar to a bee sting or a sunburn feeling and it doesn't go numb after they have started either. You continue to feel it although different pain levels in different areas.
Since they layer the colors when they do the tattoo (they start with the darkest first) of course they will eventually go over some areas repeatedly and they can be tender after a while depending on the size of the tattoo

Places such as the inner arm and ankle are the most painful cos the skin is thinnest there. Places like the back, belly and bum are usually the least painful. It can feel painful at first but then the area goes numb. Your body has a built in warning system that's like 'shut down and stop the pain' so if you can make it through the first 10 minutes without fainting you should be alright. Don't be a woose ;)

My pain tolerance is pretty high (though the ink over my spine hurt like heck.) My ex-husband passed out during a small (20 minute) tat on his ankle, so it must have hurt pretty bad!
