it seems like my school goes out of their way for doing everything for our athletes, but for the people who are doing advanced studies, or are on extra-curicular activities (debate team, math team ect...) we dont get as much funding/attention.

Absolutely not fair, but a very true reflection on human nature. There is something so exciting, so stimulating, so adrenaline filled, in watching two guys sprint for a finish line, or score a goal or a whatever. There isn't that same exciting rush for the academic over-achievers, although what they do isn't as transient as scoring the goal or sprinting to the finish line, and will likely be far more important in the long run.
We can be awfully dumb about some things, can't we?
And the other possibility is that the average Joe or Jane may simply not understand what the overachiever is doing.

And this is where parents and family members need to vocalize their displeasure when the school district's board of education - or with a private school, board members - hold their next meeting. There should be varsity letters in those programs and media releases going out to local media on these achievers. There is absolutely no excuse for any other policy.
