The .40 S & W shoots a wider bullet than the .9mm out of the same size pistol. The .40 was designed to duplicate the performance of the .45 acp out of a .9mm size pistol (for shooters with smaller hands). The hottest .9mms (115 to 127 grain +P & +P+ rounds) come closer to duplicating the performance of the .357 Magnum than the .40 S & W. With the right ammo either one will serve you well. Just decide what you like. I carry the .10mm myself.
Best.

The 9mm round is softer on recoil than th.40 S&W, but the .40 S&W delivers more impact energy on the target than the 9mm.

Velocity of the bullet and power. A 9mm is smaller but faster....40 is bigger and a little slower.

Ballistic dataindicates 40 Sw is very close to .357mag which as you know is very powerfull. 9mm Para although has a lot of real world shooting and ballistic data is not a good one round stop cartridge. 40 sw is far better for one shot stopping power.

diameter.
European arms have always measured their caliber in millimeters (mm) and American arms have always measured theirs in inch fractions.
a 9mm is equivalent to .354 in diameter (or a .38 cal)
a .40 is equivalent to 10mm
In terms of power and speed the .40 caliber is a larger heavier load, and many of the rounds are roughly the equivalent of some of the 9mm in speed. Being a larger heavier round it makes them hit harder.

Not much lethality, 9mm ammo is cheaper so you can practice more and be more proficent.
