I have 3 cavities needing to be filled. One or two of the three in the front I think.
My dentist recommended that I get ZOOM teeth whitening done, THEN get the white fillings matched to the new shade of my teeth.
I read the consent form for Zoom and it said something about open cavities and the bleaching gel getting into will cause substantial pain.
So then why is my dentist not doing my fillings first, then the ZOOM?
Also, I have mild/moderate generalized enamel hypoplasia and she said the ZOOM would blend all my white spots in (and my teeth are a bit yellow to begin with).
I did read something about ZOOM being less effective on white spots...so am I going to end up with blotches?
What are your opinions?
BTW, I have heard having ZOOM done is like chewing on tinfoil.

Your dentist is not doing the fillings first for exactly the reasons you stated in your question. There are some people who have decent sized (large) cavities who can expect the pain that you describe, but if you have "garden variety" average cavities, it should not be a problem. If you are really afraid about this, you can ask about the slower but less "shocking" home whitening treatment. The incidence of sensitivity is much, much lower this way.

I would never tell a patient that any whitening will "even out" the white spots as this is very unpredictable.

Zoom ( I have had done 2 times btw) is wonderful and fast. ALSO I assume your cavities are in the inside of the molars.. You do know that when you get Zoom done your mouth is held open by a plastic object and they only bleach the teeth that show when you smile (not your molars and such) but mainly just your front top/bottom and side teeth..

When Zoom is done also they put a type of plastic they mold around your gums to keep the bleach from getting on your gums so the bleach won't get into your cavities. Trust your dentist, because I think he knows what he is talking about..

Don't be nervous with Zoom cause you will be so happy with the outcome! The first pic is me BEFORE ZOOM and you see where my teeth were getting dingy and darkish........ then in the green shirt you see how white it made them!

I just had to have a filling and crown done and ZOOM has made my teeth so white that my teeth were whiter than the lightest shade they had to match for my crown!

My friend that had ZOOM done also had white spots and when she had ZOOM done it did just 'blend in' with her color.

I don't know who told you Zoom was like chewing on tinfoil lol thats was not my experience either time lol

They usually suggest whitening prior to a tooth color restoration so they can match the filling color to the final shade of your whitened teeth. This is common.
You should be caution about the white spots that are preexisting b/c whitening may end up making those areas even whiter. Keep in mind, in office whiteners are stronger in order to get faster results and can also make teeth alot more sensitive. If you have history of tooth sensitvity I would strongly suggest you try a take home kit. They're ALOT cheaper and less sensitive.
