Did you take note of the words "substance" and "evidence"? Yes, they are real. Or at lest as real as faith in ANYTHING can be.

If I plot a graph of volume (on y-axis) against temp (in degrees Celsius) of a fixed mass of gas, I get a graph with a positive gradient. This is evidence based on the available data. If I were to extrapolate that graph backwards, I will arrive at negative 273 degrees Celsius or absolute zero (zero degrees Kelvin). All scientist use this scale but is it real? After all, it's based on an extrapolation. Besides, the gas will condense as it is cooled, and if it is further cooled, it will solidify. So, how real is absolute zero?

Based on the story below, one can clearly see that Jesus thought that faith based on some evidence is the greatest type of faith.

"Mat 8:5 And when he was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him,
Mat 8:6 and saying, Lord, my servant lieth in the house sick of the palsy, grievously tormented.
Mat 8:7 And he saith unto him, I will come and heal him.
Mat 8:8 And the centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant shall be healed.
Mat 8:9 For I also am a man under authority, having under myself soldiers: and I say to this one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.
Mat 8:10 And when Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. "

According to Matt 8:9, the centurion expressed his faith in Jesus based on his (the centurion's) EXPERIENCE.

So yes, my faith is real if an extrapolation based on EVIDENCE may be considered real.

Faith by definition is not real. It is a sublime hope.
